Sara’s Elevation
The death of Sara, follows the story of the “binding of Isaac.” Rashi explains that when she was told that her beloved son was placed on the altar as a sacrifice, her soul left her and she passed away.
The simple explanation of this story is that the fright and grief associated with the news she heard, caused her to leave this world. She did not live long enough to be told that her son was perfectly okay.
On a deeper level, it was explained that Sara was elevated to an extremely high level of spiritual ecstasy. She merited having a son who was compared to a holy sacrifice to G-d.
Every Jewish mother would like to see their son become a scholar and become a true servant of Hashem. Sara’s son reached a level that she could not have imagined was possible.
This elevated her to such a high spiritual level, she could never come back to this world.
The same thing happened to Ben Azai when he entered that famous “orchard.” The Maharsha wrote that “he gazed and he died.” He perceived G-d in a way that humans normally cannot.
The same was true of the two sons of Aharon, Nadav and Avihu, that they saw an aspect of Hashem that was so high, that they could not return to this world.
This is another example that shows the potential of a human being to reach the level of an angel. The soul that we possess has an element of Godliness in it. Sara Imeinu reached this level because of her exhilaration at having succeeded in giving birth to a very holy and pure son. Her joy was boundless and caused her to leave this world, and enter the higher worlds.
