Scholarly stupidity

Since President Trump made his historic announcement regarding Israel’s eternal capital in Jerusalem, not only have all Arab and Muslim nations rejected it (as they stupidly rejected partition in 1947) and have begun raging protests, but among other stupid people are the protesting Jews.

One hundred twenty-four Jewish scholars of Jewish studies in major American universities have signed a petition denouncing recognition of Jerusalem as our capital and removal of the American embassy from Tel-Aviv to Jerusalem.

Leaders of the American Reform Judaism movement have denounced it. Several leading American rabbis have denounced it. So have the majority of the United Nations and all of the European Union.

Doom-sayers are predicting a war in the Middle East as dangerous as the threat of war from North Korea. They have forgotten that the war officially began in 1948 and has never ended to this day.

Some reasonable nations are inclined to follow the Trump proposal and propose to move their respective embassies from Tel-Aviv to Jerusalem. Among them, as of this moment, are the Philippines and the Czech Republic.

The late Czech great leaders, Tomas Masaryk and Eduard Benes would be rejoicing. They had long been supporters of a Jewish state in Palestine and during our 1948 war of independence it was Czechoslovakia which provided us with most of the needed weapons and ammunition which helped us significantly to win the war against seven invading Arab nations.

We also need to remember that when our independence was proclaimed, the former Soviet Union wanted to be the first country to extend recognition. The American president, Harry Truman, could not allow that to happen and over the objections of his Secretary of State, Truman immediately recognized the newborn State of Israel.  In protest, his Secretary of State resigned, very happily for us.

Why do people want to evade and avoid historical facts?  King David made Jerusalem his capital three thousand years ago.  In modern times, since 1882 the majority of the population of Jerusalem has been Jewish.

When Israel declared it as our eternal capital in 1948, other than Arabs, most of the world understood it.

There is a saying that has always run true… “Jews are their own worst enemies”. The reaction of the scholarly stupidity of Jewish professors and liberal rabbis is testimony to the truth of that saying.

Jews across the world should rejoice that an American Christian leader had the courage to do what no other world leader has done over the last 70 years. The Trump Announcement will go down in history side by side with the 1917 Balfour Declaration.

There were many (and many remain) in Great Britain who denounced Lord Arthur Balfour but Britain has never rescinded that famous declaration which gave birth to the recognition of Palestine for a Jewish homeland.

Likewise, while there are calls for President Trump to rescind his recognition of Jerusalem as the Israeli capital and to keep the embassy in Tel-Aviv, he will not accommodate them. He is a man of principle and long before he became president he was a supporter of Israel and a staunch friend of the Jewish people.

Sadly, we cannot rescind the many doctoral degrees awarded to the scholars of Judaica who joined hands with Arabs and Muslims in protest of recent events  but we can publicly shame them.

Next to each of their 124 names should be parenthetically noted “scholar of stupidity”.

May the God of Israel protect us from the ignorance and abhorrence of such “scholars”.
