Senor EuroTrash, Your Flight Is Delayed: The High-Asset Dip Into Burnt Cheese

Picture blog reader the aromatic air in Terminal 2 at the Benito Juarez International Airport is thick with the scent of stale jet fuel and burnt chicory from a nearby franchise cafe.

High above, exposed steel and trusses hold up a sprawling, brutalist concrete ceiling that hums with the relentless vibration of a midnight departure rush.

The premium diplomatic lane is tucked away in a dimly lit recess, where the fluorescent  lights overhead flicker with rhythmic, anxious buzz–giving the entire Mexicali scene the  gritty, washed-out, paranoid color palette of a classic 1970s political thriller.

On the terrazzo floor, a small mountain of Tumi luggage sits abandoned. Clustered around it is world-weary Fellini Fasta, Chief Administrator of the Pan-Continental League, and his retinue: three very exhausted Europeans in rumpled linen suits. One assistant frantically with  coarse, salty language refreshes his tablet, staring at a frozen bar of an EU-Mexico data-transfer portal, another is desperately waving a corporate credit card at a closed VIP lounge door, the third is quietly weeping into a colorful Mexican paper cup of lukewarm horchata.

Amidst this bureaucratic paralysis, Fasta, on his encrypted iPhone stands marooned at the glass partition.

The Dialogue

FELLINI FASTA                                                                                                                  (Sweating under the flickering lights, holding his encrypted phone to his ear while shoving his diplomatic passport against the smudged glass to an agent on the phone)                            Yes,  hello, baby? Is this my precious little Bratislava baby on the other end? Yes, it’s Papa. Papa’s a very Wall Street Journal, Times of London important man– Oh, yes, yes. Did I tell  you that re-architected the entire Western geopolitical infrastructure today at the summit? Oh, yes I did, baby, haha.                                                                                                                    (listening, looks at watch)                                                                                                            Baby, listen to me. You are listening to the the architect of the Transatlantic future, baby!  The Streamlined Mexicali Continental Accord is ninety-nine-point-ninety nine percent locked down.                                                                                                                                (listening)                                                                                                                                      Baby…Are you even hearing me? I stood next to Cordelia Sterlingbaum and Urlika von der Laden-Leun! But the dairy lobby, baby, has put me in a lurch.                                                    (listening)                                                                                                                                      Blow them a kiss?! Baby, this is brie we are talking about. Unpasteurized leverage, baby. If I give these cunning Mexicans a fast-dog-track pass on their soft-cheese quotas, Bratislava will strip me of my title Monday morning! Tuesday tops! You wouldn’t want that, would you, baby?                                                                                                                                            (listening and pacing)                                                                                                                  The entire supply chain is a house of cards, baby, how many times do I have to tell you that?  (listen, looks at watch)                                                                                                                  I’m a melting block of artisinal gouda in a 7,000 foot perspiration crisis.                                  (presents his passport)                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        AGENTE CRUZ                                                                                                                       (Stares blankly at the passport through the glass. Does not look up.)                                        Passport is blurry. Step back from the partition.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                FELLINI FASTA                                                                                                                        (hissing defiantly through the speak-hole at Cruz)                                                                      Do you even know who I am?  I am the soul of the streamlined EU-Mexico agreement.                                                                                                                                                                AGENTE CRUZ                                                                                                                        Step back from the partition, senor.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  FELLINI FASTA                                                                                                                   (hissing angrily through the speak-hole at Cruz)                                                                        Can you not see who am I to you?! I am Fellini Fasta! The Chief Administrator of the Pan- Continental League!

AGENTE CRUZ                                                                                                                        (Slowly types a single key with one finger. Does not look up.)                                                    Eh, the computer, the computer it say you are not in the system, Senor Baby-Talk. And tell your second banana to put the credit card away. The lounge closes at ten.                                  (looks at watch, then looks up slowly)                                                                                          It’s ten after ten, senor.

FELLINI FASTA                                                                                                                        (ignoring Cruz, whispering frantically)                                                                                        Papa is stuck in a terrible editorial queue at the Mexico City Airport. Chow, baby-doll.                                                                                                                                                                  AGENTE CRUZ                                                                                                                       (Slams a heavy, mechanical red stamp onto a blank ledger. Does not look up.)                        If you and your three amigos are hungry, we still have some cheese dip in the kitchen. Oh, but it’s burnt, senor, it’s burnt.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            FELLINI FASTA                                                                                                                        (hiss-slobbers angrily through the speak-hole at Cruz)                                                                We don’t want you best cheese dip!                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    FIRST BANANA                                                                                                                        (Panting, tapping the table screen)                                                                                              I have good news and bad news, Chief Fasta, the Bratislava server just timed out! The ugh, the ugh digital customs authorization is completely stalled in the queue! It’s an infrastructure  collapse!

FELLINI FASTA                                                                                                                        (beat passes)                                                                                                                                 Ok. What is the good news?                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                             FIRST BANANA                                                                                                                        I, uh, just gave it you, sir. The bad news is the Times of London has published a blog titled: EuroTrash Cheese & Holy Guacamole: The High-Asset Dip On Wall Street’s Tortilla.

FELLINI FASTA                                                                                                                      (trying to process)                                                                                                                        Does this EuroTrash whatever-whatever-tortilla-thing you’re talking about concern me?                                                                                                                                                                FIRST BANANA                                                                                                                         Um, afraid so, sir. You may want to have a sit and pull out your tablet. You don’t have to try and find the blog. It will find you.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                      Fasta finds a white-wicker chair in a tired, dimly lit VIP lounge, whistles and snaps his fingers at a janitor doubling as a make-shift waiter and expecting a tip, orders a mineral water, tips a coin, pats his mouth dry with the folded napkin on the table, and checks the  evening market aggregate feeds.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        Right between a dry Reuters alert and a dense Bloomberg terminal update, Fasta’s screen flashes with this headline: EuroTrash Cheese & Holy Guacamole: The High-Asset Dip

Fasta’s eyes widen, the blood drains from his face, frantically reading the text aloud to his staff on their feet in a panicked, high-pitched cadence.                                                                                                                                                                                                                     FELLINI FASTA                                                                                                                        (besides himself)                                                                                                                           This Mickey Mouse Mosley is calling us “EuroTrash Cheese.” He says our bureaucratic trade directions are nothing but a congealed, dairy-based illusion masking the true–                          (stumbles on algorithm)                                                                                                                Al go…Al-go-rith-mic soul of the Levant! Soul of the Levant! Ah!– How dare, how dare he!  (flat after a breath)                                                                                                                        What does that mean?

SECOND BANANA                                                                                                                   (looking hungry)                                                                                                                            I believe it’s a snack, sir.

THIRD BANANA                                                                                                                        (looking hungrier)                                                                                                                        It’s a snackfood.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  FELLINI FASTA                                                                                                                        Snackfood! Snackfood! Who authorized this snackfood analogy! My career is over!                                                                                                                                                                      Fasta rushes back over to the glass partition and taps the glass, but Cruz is unfazed.                                                                                                                                                                      AGENTE CRUZ                                                                                                                         What is it?                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          FELLINI FASTA                                                                                                                      (double-angrily hisses through the speaker-hole at Cruz)                                                            We want to get to the tarmac and get wheels-up and get out of Mexico City. I have had it!                                                                                                                                                            AGENTE CRUZ                                                                                                                         (sharpens a red pencil, never looks up)                                                                                        Senior EuroTrash, your flight is delayed. The line forms behind the plastic chairs.                                                                                                                                                                         FELLINI FASTA                                                                                                                        (without speak-hole)                                                                                                              What?!                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                AGENTE CRUZ                                                                                                                        (blowing on pencil)                                                                                                                    Next.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    FELLINI FASTA                                                                                                                        (without speak-hole )                                                                                                                    This is an outrage!                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                              AGENTE CRUZ                                                                                                                        Next.

Fasta’s staff watch him fan himself with nothing but his hand, staring out at the refueling jet waiting on the jet fuel, and wondering if Fasta will form a new line behind the plastic chairs.

The End– Senor.

While the satirical script was inspired by the political players at the EU-Mexico summit, the harsh reality is Europe and Mexico have chanted, “ole, ole”  to the trade pact in Mexico City, eliminating  95% of  tariffs.

Israel has had independent, free deals with both regions since 2000. Naturally, you’d think an enterprising Israeli business could ship a container of electronics to say, Mexico City, slap a sticker on it, and sail that re-heated enchilada right into Europe all cheesed up and tax-free.

Eh, wrong. Next.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  The bureaucratic wonders inspiring my mock script in Brussels anticipated the backdoor hustle. They packed the summit’s legal text with “Rules of Origin” to show they know a  loophole from a south of the border hangman’s noose.

Unless the product undergoes a radical, legally verifiable transformation on Mexican soil, it get hit with the same customs duty.at the borderline.

You can’t change the packaging and call it a Mexican cheese. Simple repackaging foreign product in Mexico does not legally change its country of origin to escape customs duties.

This missing canned laughter for these current bad joke international summits isn’t the trade. It’s the obligatory joint declaration and forced politeness to modernize bilateral treaty tariffs, and expand digital commerce.

The sweaty diplomats held a “High_Level Political Dialogue,” just to choreograph a public statement, while soaking their drawers enough to wring them out and cool a hot radiator for  the cartel to get back on the road.

Basically, it’s an exercise in saying nothing and everything politically at the same time, as if written, produced and directed by “El Alan Smithee,” who wants a check and zero credit.

They want a political solution, they want harmony–-all neatly gift-wrapped and pressed- released for roundabout 582 million people, give or take a mil.

“Bajo el agua,” the entire  EU-Mexican summit is coming across a little bit like a campy Vincent Price thriller such a 1949’s The Bribe.

We are staring at a Mexican madman plotThey are in vicious cycle, with themselves the cheese toppings on the over-fried platter of theatricality, entirely oblivious to the unwashed utensils used by Wall Street to dig in.

The spreadsheet illusions are crumbling, the physical borders are locked down,, and the Mexican curtain falls to crush the stick-beaten pinata donkey of a macroeconomic farce.

The Mexican plot thickens…

You can hear the echoing, theatrical laugh of Vincent Price ringing out over the dirty roads, sending the cartels running to the mountains for cover:HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HAAAAAA!
