Severe Weather Threat

Stormy Weather on the Way (Barry Lynn)

Storms Friday: Hail and Flash Flooding Possible

A low-pressure system moving along the Mediterranean, just west of Israel, will bring thunderstorms as it moves toward Cyprus.

The main concern is hail and sudden flooding, especially from the northern Negev through the Judean hills and into Jerusalem.

  • Many areas could see hail around 2–4 cm (about 1 inch)
  • In stronger storms, hail up to 4–5 cm (near 2 inches) is possible
  • Higher areas like Jerusalem may see larger hail, since it has less time to melt on the way down

At the same time, flash flooding is a real risk in the Negev and Dead Sea region:

  • Desert ground doesn’t absorb water well, so rain runs off quickly
  • Dry riverbeds (wadis) can fill up fast and flood suddenly
  • Flooding can happen even if it’s not raining where you are, due to storms upstream

Bottom line: Strong storms Friday could bring damaging hail and dangerous flash floods, especially in the mountains and desert areas. Stay alert if you’re traveling or outdoors.

Much cooler weather will follow: Next week will see quite chilly weather and a chance of showers, including through Israel Remembrance Day and Israeli Independence Day.  It should warm up nicely thereafter.
