Shock, dismay and anger

I am in shock.

A baby, 11 months old murdered, in the West Bank.

I cannot imagine what the parents are feeling. I never want to understand the pain they are feeling. May God give them comfort.

I cannot imagine the hate that led someone to do this. I cannot fathom doing this to a family. May they be caught and punished to the fullest extent of the law. May they be caught soon.

A baby is a precious gift. It does not matter whether the baby is Palestinian or Israeli. We should not allow the hate that adults feel destroy a precious baby’s life.

Children are not born with a gene that tells them to hate others. They are taught that — by adults, either through education or their actions. If an adult says over and over that “Stay away from (insert ethnic group/race/religion). They are evil. They should be spit on/killed etc”, children learn that. If we separate ourselves from other groups, children will learn that. What are we teaching our children? How do we stop this endless cycle of violence on BOTH sides? How do we make sure our children don’t have to suffer through the same things?

I don’t know that answers to those questions. I wish I did. All I do know is one family’s heart is broken. And that is a tragedy that all of us should be in shock. There is no place for this in any society.
