Sinat Chinam — Baseless Hatred

It was sinat chinam, baseless hatred, between Kamtza and Bar Kamtza which led to the Roman destruction of our holy Temple and the sacking of Jerusalem which led us into two thousand years of exile.

Once again the evil disease of sinat chinam has reared its ugly head with the vile, cowardly and shameful act of the desecration of the grave monument for Baruch Mandelblit z”l,  the late father of our esteemed Attorney General, Avichai Mandelblit.

When I read the terrible news I was sickened. How could a Jew desecrate a Jewish grave? But the answer jumped into my head instantly.

It is due to the incitement and threats of harm alleged to Prime Minister Netanyahu against the Attorney General of Israel who will shortly announce the indictment against him for three crimes.

I frankly would not be surprised if the culprit of this dastardly crime was someone close to Bibi. Nothing can surprise me any more and while I do not make accusations in matters of which I have no knowledge, nonetheless suspicions are always present.

Attorney General Mandelblit is doing an unpleasant job to the very best of his legal knowledge and abilities. He has no interest in smearing Bibi’s already smeared reputation among many Israelis. He is only upholding the law and seeking justice.

Crimes have been committed by the Prime Minister although he naturally denies them. They have been proven by thorough police investigations and more so by testimony of witnesses who were attached to the Prime Minister. Those witnesses who were not involved have nothing to gain by their true testimony. They only related things that they saw and heard personally. And they did not lie.

An indictment will definitely be forthcoming. It cannot be swept up in the carpets of the Knesset or the house on Balfour street. But whether a conviction will be the result we cannot know. It is incredulous that Bibi has the chutzpah…the nerve… to refuse stepping aside while the investigations take place. And even if or when he is indicted he refuses to step down. The man has fallen deeper into disgrace.

Who among his cohorts could have known in which cemetery Baruch Mandelblit was buried?  Whose sick mind prompted him to enter a Jewish cemetery with the sole purpose of destroying only one particular grave monument?

We are re-living the ancient days of Kamtza and Bar Kamtza whose hatred for one another was the cause for the destruction of the holy Temple.

Where will this sinat chinam… this baseless and sickening hatred lead us?  The democracy in our country is falling down and we are between a theocracy and a dictatorship. Not even God wants to intervene.

The police search for the criminal will not bring desired effect. They will look in the wrong places.

The Jewish soul has been wounded. The Jewish heart is broken. The Jewish compassion is no more. The Jewish respect for the dead has been desecrated. The clean name of Jews has been turned into filth by a

young Jewish criminal who sought revenge upon the man who is seeking law and order and justice in the confused State of Israel.

Prime Minister Netanyahu should  make a public apology to Attorney General Mandelblit in the name of all the people in Israel for a crime committed due to his constant incitement.

Sinat chinam… baseless hatred… is a horrible disease. There is no inoculation against it . It can be tragically contagious.

The Prime Minister and his household and his followers would do well to follow the advice of our ancient great prophet Isaiah (1: 16):

“Wash you, make yourself clean; put away the evil of your doings from before My eyes.  Cease to do evil;  learn to do good.”

And put a permanent end to sinat chinam.
