Stop the presses: Jews still more liberal than other religious groups

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

Another poll, another bit of evidence Jews remain more liberal and more Democratic than any other religious group.

This time it’s from Gallup, which came up with the less-than-startling  conclusion that 43 percent of Jews consider themselves “liberal,” with only 20 percent identifying as “conservative.”

By way of contrast, only 16 percent of Protestants and 19 percent of Catholics say they’re liberal, and a measly 8 percent of Mormons.

Jews are even more likely to label themselves liberal than those with no religion or who call themselves atheists or agnostics.  Jews are a LOT more liberal than Muslims, only 30 percent of whom identified themselves in that way.

Gallup, recognizing the Jewish figures for the “well, DUH” story they are, chose to focus in their press release on the striking numbers about political preferences among Mormons.

“Mormons are both the most Republican and the most conservative of any of the major religious groups in the U.S. today,” Gallup officials wrote in their press release.

But the breakdown does not include subgroups of Protestants, many of which rival the Mormons in conservative identification.
