The Battle for the Gen Z Mind
Virtually every one born between 1997 and 2012, “Generation Z,” carries a smartphone in their pocket. This means Gen Z has more access to information than any generation in history. With unparalleled access to news and opinions, we are the first generation to witness history in real-time, watching events unfold right in front of our faces.
However, this access comes with a heavy price: we are also the most targeted generation in history for digital psychological warfare. For years, foreign actors have been playing the long game. Countries like Qatar have poured billions of dollars into the American education system, funding prestigious universities and quietly shaping curricula. Take Cornell University, for example. As a premier Ivy League school in New York, it has received approximately $2.3 billion in funding from Qatar over the last two decades. It is little surprise that the US Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights opened a Title VI investigation into Cornell following repeated incidents of discrimination and harassment against Jewish students.
The goal is subtle but dangerous: to soften the image of extremist ideologies and slowly turn the next generation of American leaders against their own country and its strategic partners. When you see students on elite campuses echoing the talking points of regimes that oppress women, hang dissidents, and stifle free speech, you are seeing the “return on investment” of that foreign funding. A Harvard-Harris poll from August 2025 revealed a staggering statistic: 60% of Gen Z Americans favored Hamas—an internationally designated terrorist organization—over Israel.
How can a generation that prides itself on empathy and progressive politics support a barbaric terrorist organization over the only Western democracy in the Middle East? Israel is one of the only countries in the region that grants equal rights to LGBTQ individuals, ensures women have the same opportunities as men, and protects citizens who criticize their own government.
However, hope is not lost. According to a recent report by the AJC and Hillel International, 7 in 10 Jewish college students say that caring about Israel is a core part of their identity. They are refusing to back down, even when their peers fall into the trap of propaganda. And it isn’t just Jewish students who are waking up. The 2026 News Literacy Project report found that an overwhelming 94% of students are actually asking for more education on how to spot the “fake news” and manipulation being pushed their way.
Our generation has the tools to see through the noise. The choice is ours. We can allow ourselves to be the generation that was bought and paid for by foreign interests, or we can be the generation that used its vast access to information to choose the truth. We can be the generation that stands for common sense, defends our allies, and ensures that Western civilization remains strong. It’s time to stop being a target for brainwashing and start being a force for the good fight.
