The BBC’s favourite Holocaust movie?
Of course – it’s the one without Jews; the one about Palestinians.
One fitting way to commemorate Yom HaShoah would be to watch a film. A good way perhaps to introduce a young generation to this most painful and vital of memories. But which film?
Luckily the BBC can help. The topic was discussed by the cultural behemoth on the most recent episode of flagship World Service programme The Arts Hour. Presenter Nikki Bedi and ‘cultural critic’ Guy Lodge agreed on their favourite Holocaust film; it’s the one without the Jews. And why? Er, because there aren’t any Jews. Oh, but why? Because it’s really about the Palestinians.
Of course.
Nikki Bedi: There have been so many different approaches taken on film to tell the stories of the holocaust; documentaries, love stories, children’s films, even comedy. Which approach and film has affected you the most?
Guy Lodge: It was actually really recently, about two years ago, Zone of Interest
Nikki Bedi: I couldn’t agree more…
Guy Lodge: it’s sort of a Holocaust film in negative; it’s all about the suffering that you don’t see
Nikki Bedi: Yes
Guy Lodge: …and it makes very effectively the point of how we can all blinker ourselves to suffering that’s happening right around us…an allegory for everything from Palestine today to other atrocities and I think it’s a stunning film
Nikki Bedi: I concur, thank you so much Guy
