The Covenant At Mount Hermon
There are various covenants mentioned in the Torah between Hashem and the Jewish people.
Probably the most impressive covenant was the one made directly to Avraham Avinu at the beginning of his journey. There are commentators that say that this took place on Mount Hermon in the north of Israel, 430 years before the exodus from Egypt. If the verse also says the Jewish people left at the end of 400 years, and that coincided with the birth of Yitzchak, Avraham would have been seventy years old when this event took place.
There is a great deal of symbolism connected with this promise that Hashem made to Avraham. But the significant part of this promise was the prophecy for the future.
Avraham is told that his children will be strangers in a strange land. They will be oppressed, but they will leave with great wealth.
He also tells Avraham that he will long life, and he will die a happy and fulfilled individual. He is promised that the Land of Israel will belong to his children forever.
The fourth generation will return after enslavement, because, by then, the sin of the Emorites will be complete. They will no longer have any rights to be in the land.
The terms of this covenant were repeated several times by Moshe Rabbeinu. It was formerly accepted by all of the Jewish people at Mount Sinai.
We were G-d’s chosen people in the merit of Avraham Avinu. We are to follow in his footsteps. We are to stand up for truth and all that is sacred, just as he did.
We are to stand up and be proud to be Jews. There is a sacred bond between Hashem and His people. We must not shirk our responsibility and diligently fulfill our part of the covenant.
