The Future: Midterms Happened (Part II)
The question is: will the Democrats who are Jewish and enjoyed electoral success last night – especially those with Presidential ambitions like Pritzker, Ossoff, and Shapiro – finally stand for our people?
I get that this was an election about the ends justifying the means. The end of curbing Trump and MAGA justified obfuscating how critical and important the joint Israel-US attack on Iran this year was.
Now that the prerequisite for curbing Trump has been met – securing power – do these men keep shpieling about how unfortunate preventing Iran from securing a nuclear weapon is?
The modern Democratic Party was built because – as Milton Himmelfarb stated in 1973: Jews earn like Episcopalians and vote like Puerto Ricans.
Before President Johnson drove the Civil Rights Act through Congress in 1964, the Democratic Party was a coalition, one of whose components were Southern segregationist states.
The Southern states “seceded” from the Democratic Party with the candidacy of George Wallace in 1968. Post-1968, the Democratic urban machines could still churn out votes, but without financial muscle – not to mention public relations and media savvy – the Democrats were overmatched.
Only because Jews defied the trend of other Americans, who rose in socioeconomic class and switched political affiliation, was the Democratic Party able to hold its own against Republicans.
Pritzker, Ossoff, Shapiro, and last night’s hero – Senator Schumer – built their political careers through this fabric and upon this foundation. They have the chance to step up and step forward; or will they continue to suffer the jealousy that animates the hate so many others in their party project?
The Jews as a successful people – the Jews, as the recipients of revelation at Sinai – excite jealousy. That jealousy isn’t from the have-nots and the underclass as we usually imagine. The jealousy arises from our peers! – those with whom we share socioeconomic and educational attainment. Many of our fellow liberals – and certainly left-liberals – hate us because we have a teaching, a Torah, and an ethic that allows us to become affluent but vote with the interests of the poor.
Justice is a political imperative. That requires action domestically, but since justice is universal, it requires a foreign policy that executes justice, too.
We have a responsibility to make sure that now that they’ve achieved their end – power – these men use it in all its forms responsibly. That requires supporting President Trump and Israel’s mission to defeat the IRGC and stop Iran from ever building a nuclear weapon.
