The Ineffable Name

Rashi had an interesting explanation as to how Moshe Rabbeinu killed the Egyptian hitting a Jew. He interprets, “smiting the Egyptian,” to mean that he killed him by using the שם המפורש, the ineffable Divine Name.

This gives us a bit of an understanding of what made the Temple service on Yom Kippur, so special. The Kohein Hagadol uttered this name ten times during that holy day.
This is not something that someone can teach someone else. It is not about a special way of pronouncing Hashem’s Name.

It applied only to someone who was on an especially high spiritual level like Moshe Rabbeinu.

The Sefer Hatoda’ah describes how the Kohein Gadol was able to do this after he was purified and sanctified. He rose above everything earthly and was now prepared to utter the Name.

His mouth was opened, and Holy and Glorious Name “emerged” from his lips. It was a kind of magical moment.

This explains why all those present who heard the High Priest’s utterance, spontaneously fell on their faces. It was an almost indescribable experience of intense elevation.

This is why we pray for the rebuilding of the Third Temple, so that Israel can once again be elevated to that high level of closeness to G-d.
