The Jewish body / Les Juifs et leur corps

The Jewish body

a brief history, by Albert Russo.

inspired by Marvin Konner’s book of the same title.

First there is Adam and Eve, created in the image of the God of Genesis,

both healthy and beautiful. It’s the perfect body.

Next comes the circumcised male body, which seals the people to their Lord.

It is the body of the chosen people.

After the original sin, the body will henceforth know suffering,

and the pains of childbirth. It is the tested body.

With the ‘biblical’ body, both men and women will work the land and carry

heavy loads, which will strengthen their muscles. They will be strong.

The body of the diaspora, from Roman antiquity to the Nazi era, will become

increasingly weak, spirituality taking on great importance to the detriment

of the physical aspect, we shall then speak of the ‘neglected’ body.

The immigration of millions of Jews to the United States will mean that, gradually,

they will ‘correct’ their bodies, because they will feel

more vigorous. This is the invigorated body.

There will be the ‘emaciated’ body, that of the death camps.

The ‘Zionist’ body will be born at the end of the 19th century, with the hard work

of the pioneers on their ancestral land; by making the desert bloom,

their body will become fortified.

But at the end of World War II, the skeletal survivors will return with

a ‘broken’ body.

Long before the Independence of Israel, there was the ‘fighting’ body, where the

strength of the warrior will count above all, allied to the spirit of survival.

I will add, to conclude, the body of the second millennium,

a magnificent body, slender, muscular and sinewy,

shaped by the mixture of races and giving this Israeli body

of the country’s young men and women which is the envy of all nations,

Mens sana in corpore sano.

Mens sana in corpore sano.
