The New Jewish Soldiers of WWII Museum
Were there Jewish Soldiers in the Armed Forces that fought during World War Two? Of course there were. Now their stories are being told in the new Museum of the Jewish Soldier in WWII.
For many years we have been educated and exposed to the stories and experiences of the the Holocaust. We know all about the hardships they faced, the camps, survivors and more. Every year we commemorate Yom Hashoa, Holocaust memorial day. We may know about one or two ghetto uprisings, or a few stories of defiance.
Yet most of us really don’t know a lot about Jews who fought bravely against the Nazis and others , as part of the Armed Forces of the countries fighting in WWII.
The new Museum of the Jewish Soldier in WWII, was designed to bring these Jewish Soldiers of World War Two to life. Geared to age 15 and above, it is located on the grounds of the Armored Corps Museum in Latrun. My colleagues and I toured this new museum a few days ago. What we saw was pretty phenomenal!
Using various high tech videos, dioramas and more we are taken back in time to World War Two. Recreated scenes of soldiers in various Armed Forces, some as volunteers, others as draftees. Men and Women who ” joined up” to fight the in the war. Some became high ranking officers, spies, foot soldiers, partisans and more. All expressing their loyalty to their home country, while at the same time keeping loyal to their faith as Jews.
Many faced antisemitism. Yet they did not fail in their missions. Instead they set aside their trials and tribulations as Jews and in many instances led the fight. Stories of Jewish heroism and bravery abound! Many received medals, certificates of commendations, honors, and more. One just needs to be escorted by a museum guide for 1.5 hrs and go from room to room to experience it all.
The story of the Jewish Soldiers of World War Two is a story that needs to be told. When you are next in Israel, or if you are here now, I highly suggest that you make the time to visit this new museum and learn all about these brave Jews.
We are all here today, thanks to them!
