The two ways Redemption may come

Redemption itself is a necessary stage in ending all human suffering

On the Shabbat morning of Passover, we read Ezekiel 37:1-14.

The bottom line of Chapters 35-39 is that one will see the miracles and know that their Author is G^d Himself, telling us What He really is about.

Ezekiel 37:4-6 says twice G^d will bring dead bones around him to life. I will revive you, put sinews upon you, and flesh, and skin; I will revive you.

The Rabbis say this symbolizes the two ways our final Redemption may arrive. Or it comes in one instance. That has the risk we might die on the spot from shock. Just as our Tradition says happened when G^d directly spoke to us at His giving of the Torah. Or it may come in stages, just like the gradual revival the Prophet describes. Either way, the dead will return.

The Prophecy is in three parts. First, it says what he was told to say. Then, he said so, and it worked, again in two ways, reviving an enormous army. And then, he is told to prophesize the same to all the dried, hopeless bones of the whole House of Israel, that will be revived by G^d’s Word.

That means that when medical science has progressed so much that we stopped death and revived the dead, we must remember that it’s not us who accomplished this. We must stay humble and admit that also when we are smart, our brains were designed long before we were born.

How could Ezekiel walk into a valley full of Jewish bones? He was a Cohen!

One answer: pikuach nefesh: to save a life, almost all Jewish Law falls away. Another solution: There is nothing intrinsically wrong with anything forbidden to us. It’s only wrong because G^d said so. So, He can tell us to do what He forbade earlier. Just like we were ordered to buy and bind sheep on Shabbat haGadol before we left Egypt. The One Who told us to keep Shabbat can tell us not to. And because the Egyptians were used to us keeping Shabbat, they asked us what happened. Then, we told them we were commanded to do so and, in another four days, to slaughter for food these animals they worshipped. That enraged them so much that they wanted to kill us, which enabled G^d to miraculously stop them from harming us, again warning the Egyptians that their resistance was futile.

Just like ten days ago, when Iran fired 331 missiles and bomb-laden drones at Israel and only one person was wounded by shrapnel but is now out of danger. You would expect millions of Gentiles to storm the gates of the rabbis to convert, but cynically, no such thing happened. This highlights the greatness of Jethro, who heard of the miraculous redemption from Egypt and came to convert. Everyone else heard it too, but did not come.

This short list doesn't mean to disrespect others who taught him a lot or a little. One of his rabbis calls him Mr. Innovation [Ish haChidushim]. Yet, his originalities seem to root deeply in traditional Judaism, though they may grow in unexpected directions. In fact, he claims he's modernizing nothing. Rather, mainly basing himself on the basic Hebrew Torah text, he tries to rediscover classical Jewish thought almost lost in thousands of years of stifling Gentile domination and Jewish assimilation. (He pleads for a close reading of the Torah instead of going by rough assumptions of what it would probably mean and before fleeing to Commentaries.) This, in all aspects of life, but prominently in the areas of Free Will, Activism, Homosexuality for men, and Redemption. * He hopes that his words will inspire and inform, and disturb the comfortable and comfort the disturbed. He aims to bring a fresh perspective rather than harp on the obvious and familiar. When he can, he loves to write encyclopedic overviews. He doesn't expect his readers to agree.
