The uninspiring European elections in 2014: Party proposals on relations with Israel

One of the things which surprises me of some European political parties is their pure cynicism by preaching one thing in Europe and another for the rest of the world despite their proclamation of being ” internationalists “, i.e. they want the same principles for the whole world.

One such case is the European Left and the Party of European Socialists. Many Socialists and the European Left especially those from Southern Europe pride themselves in their support for the Palestinian Authority and its ” struggle ” against Israel.  But the lack of principles and the sheer hypocresy start when you talk to them or watch them debating over Israel, the P.A and their own values. For some unknown reason part of the left in Europe, especially Communists and trade unionists have a special attraction to radical islamism such as that of Hamas to the point of supporting it even if it goes against their own principles.

Two examples will suffice:

A. The Europan Left ( a far left group of Communists, Ecologists, Republicans and Femminists :

  1. In their 2014 European Election manifesto the European Left state that ” The EU was an accomplice of Ben Ali, Mubarak an Gadaffi as is today of Netanyahu, Muhamed the VIth of Morocco and the saud dynasty ”  p.78.
  2. To put at the same level president Netanyahu of Israel and Arab dictators is beyond belief and tells how distorted and perverted the view of these allegedly leftist people can be.
  3. Then there is the issue of Palestine where we all know well that minority rights of any liberal democracy are absent ( freedom of speech, freedom of religion in its broad sense, rights of women, LGBT rights, mixed education for all sexes etc..).

It strucks me that while Israel – the only real democracy in the whole Middle East- is demonized, Palestinians are supported as a ” liberation movement ” when they love anything but freedom and democracy.

B. The Party of European Socialists.

In its Manifesto for these elections states we support people who  ” fight for democracy, social justice, non discrimination and freedom in any part of the wordl “ ( p.11 ).  And yet they support the P.A as an independent state going back to then 1967 borders.  They emphasize they want an ” independent, viable, democratic “ state living in peace and security.

But what would these parties do if the P.A turns not to be either democratic or viable ?  Will they ask for a boycott as they did with South Africa in the 1980s and 1990s ?  I bet you they wont !.  For these leftist forces Palestinians are always victims and Israel will always be the main culprit no matter what happens forgetting the fact that this state of affairs happens because one day,two events,  the 6 Day War in 1967 and later the Yom Kipur War  in 1972 was waged against Israel violating the 1947 United Nations resolution .  I am sure we all want a peaceful and viable solution to this conflict but not at any cost for Israel.
