For too long, geopolitics has been treated like a chessboard—nation-states as pieces, leaders as players, and strategy as deliberate calculation. Yet the international arena does not behave like a static game of chess. It resembles a living organism: messy, interdependent, and prone to shocks that reverberate in unpredictable ways. Systems theory, first developed in biology and later in management science, offers a powerful lens to understand this reality—and its urgency has never been greater.
