List of significant events for the Jewish people in modern times:

July 4, 1776 – 17^th of Tamuz /5537, the foundation of The United States of America.

דברים כד: יח פרשת כי תצא

וזָֽכַרְתָּ֗ כִּ֣י עֶ֤בֶד הָיִ֨יתָ֙ בְּמִצְרַ֔יִם וַיִּפְדְּךָ֛ ה’ אֱלֹקיךָ מִשָּׁ֑ם עַל כֵּ֞ן אָֽנֹכִ֤י מְצַוְּךָ֙ לַֽעֲשׂ֔וֹת אֶת הַדָּבָ֖ר הַזֶּֽה:

“You shall remember that you were a slave in Mitzrayim, and Hashem Your G-d, redeemed you from there; therefore I command you to do this thing” [gifts to the poor from the harvest].

The USA has been a very kind host nation to the Jewish people, until now. Ironically, it was founded on the same day that the Jewish Nation rejected the Torah by Har Sinai and were worshiping the golden calf. It seems the USA may be represented as a false god and thus a golden calf. Our true mission was originally to accept the Torah at Mount Sinai on the 17^th of Tamuz and then enter Eretz Yisrael three days later. That did not happen. Many Jews have chosen to live in the USA and not observe the Torah in Israel.

1914/5674 – World War I began. Around 85,000 Jews lived in Israel under Turkish rule.

אֵ֩לֶּה֩ דִבְרֵ֨י הַבְּרִ֜ית אֲשֶׁר צִוָּ֧ה ה’ אֶת משֶׁ֗ה לִכְרֹ֛ת אֶת בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל בְּאֶ֣רֶץ מוֹאָ֑ב מִלְּבַ֣ד הַבְּרִ֔ית אֲשֶׁר כָּרַ֥ת אִתָּ֖ם בְּחֹרֵֽב:

These are the words of the covenant, which Hashem commanded Moshe to make with the children of Israel in the land of Moab, besides the covenant which he made with them in Chorev.

1918/5678 – WWI ended.

דברים כט:ד כי תבוא

וָֽאוֹלֵ֥ךְ אֶתְכֶ֛ם אַרְבָּעִ֥ים שָׁנָ֖ה בַּמִּדְבָּ֑ר לֹֽא בָל֤וּ שַׂלְמֹֽתֵיכֶם֙ מֵֽעֲלֵיכֶ֔ם וְנַֽעַלְךָ֥ לֹא בָֽלְתָ֖ה מֵעַ֥ל רַגְלֶֽךָ:

I led you through the desert for forty years [during which time] your garments did not wear out from upon you, nor did your shoes wear out from upon your feet.

The Ottoman Empire was destroyed and the British conquered all of Eretz Yisrael, including Yerushalayim. In 1917 the Balfour Declaration was announced. Over 60,000 Jews were killed during the Russian Revolution. Over 12,000 Jewish German soldiers were killed. Fifty thousand Jews served as soldiers in the English armies; around 10,000 Jews were killed. This paved the way to allow more Jews to move to Israel.

1939/5700 WWII began – 1940, 1941. There were around 400,000 Jews living in Israel. German troops invaded Poland on the 17^th of Elul. Around 60,000 Jews left Europe for Israel. Approximately 300,000 Jews left Europe for England, France and the USA.

וַיִּֽחַר אַ֥ף ה’ בָּאָ֣רֶץ הַהִ֑וא לְהָבִ֤יא עָלֶ֨יהָ֙ אֶת כָּל הַקְּלָלָ֔ה הַכְּתוּבָ֖ה בַּסֵּ֥פֶר הַזֶּֽה: וַיִּתְּשֵׁ֤ם ה֙’ מֵעַ֣ל אַדְמָתָ֔ם בְּאַ֥ף וּבְחֵמָ֖ה וּבְקֶ֣צֶף גָּד֑וֹל וַיַּשְׁלִכֵ֛ם אֶל אֶ֥רֶץ אֲחֶ֖רֶת כַּיּ֥וֹם הַזֶּֽה: הַנִּ֨סְתָּרֹ֔ת ֖ה’ אֱלֹקינוּ וְהַנִּגְלֹ֞ת ֹלָֹ֤נוֹּ ֹוֹּלְֹבָֹנֵֹ֨יֹנֹוּ֨ עַד עוֹלָ֔ם לַֽעֲשׂ֕וֹת אֶת כָּל דִּבְרֵ֖י הַתּוֹרָ֥ה הַזֹּֽאת:

And Hashem’s fury raged against that land, bringing upon it the entire curse written in this book. And Hashem uprooted them from upon their land, with fury, anger and great wrath, and He cast them to another land, as it is this day. The hidden things belong to Hashem our G-d, but the revealed things apply to us and to our children forever: that we must fulfill all the words of this Torah.

The 6-12 million Jews of Europe were wiped out – the Holocaust occurred. The surviving Jews were spread all over the globe. We don’t understand why Hashem caused such a great destruction to the Jewish people. However, we see it enabled the return of the Jews to Eretz Yisrael.

1945/5705 = WWII ended. Many Jews move to Israel.

וְשָׁ֨ב ה’ אֱלֹקיךָ אֶת שְׁבֽוּתְךָ֖ וְרִֽחֲמֶ֑ךָ וְשָׁ֗ב וְקִבֶּצְךָ֙ מִכָּל הָ֣עַמִּ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֧ר הֱפִֽיצְךָ֛ ה’ אֱלֹקיךָ שָֽׁמָּה:

Then, Hashem your G-d, will bring back your exiles, and He will have mercy upon you. He will once again gather you from all the nations, where Hashem your G-d, had dispersed you.

Auschwitz was liberated by the Russians on the 12^th of Shevat. 2.5 million Jews were murdered there; 2,819 survived. The U.S. Army liberated the Buchenwald death camp on the 29^th of Nissan with 20,000 survivors. The British liberated the Bergen-Belsen death camp on the 2^nd of Iyar with 40,000 survivors. The Jewish resistance movement in Israel against British rule in Eretz Yisrael, smuggled Jews from Europe to Israel. The British intercepted most of these attempts at Jewish Aliyah.

1946/5706 – more Jews move to Israel.

אִם יִֽהְיֶ֥ה נִדַּֽחֲךָ֖ בִּקְצֵ֣ה הַשָּׁמָ֑יִם מִשָּׁ֗ם יְקַבֶּצְךָ֙ ה’ אֱלֹק֔יךָ וּמִשָּׁ֖ם יִקָּחֶֽךָ:

Even if your exiles are at the end of the heavens, Hashem, your G-d, will gather you from there, and He will take you from there.

1947/5707 – The United Nations recognizes the modern State of Israel.

וֶֽהֱבִֽיאֲךָ֞ ה’ אֱלֹקיךָ אֶל הָאָ֛רֶץ אֲשֶׁר יָֽרְשׁ֥וּ אֲבֹתֶ֖יךָ וִֽירִשְׁתָּ֑הּ וְהֵיטִֽבְךָ֥ וְהִרְבְּךָ֖ מֵֽאֲבֹתֶֽיךָ:

And Hashem, your G-d, will bring you to the land which your forefathers possessed, and you [too] will take possession of it, and He will do good to you, and He will make you more numerous than your forefathers.

1948/5708 =Israel war of independence.

וּמָ֨ל ה’ אֱלֹקיךָ אֶת לְבָֽבְךָ֖ וְאֶת לְבַ֣ב זַרְעֶ֑ךָ לְאַֽהֲבָ֞ה אֶת ה’ אֱלֹקיךָ בְּכָל לְבָֽבְךָ֥ וּבְכָל נַפְשְׁךָ֖ לְמַ֥עַן חַיֶּֽיךָ:

And Hashem your G-d, will circumcise your heart and the heart of your offspring, [so that you may] love Hashem your G-d with all your heart and with all your soul, for the sake of your life.

The British rule over Eretz Yisrael ended on the 5^th of Iyar and most of their troops evacuated. An autonomous and independent Jewish state was established. As of this year all Jews had the opportunity and right to immigrate to Israel and freely purchase land here.

1949-1952 / 5709-5712 – Building the new Jewish state of Israel. Many Yeshivos were built. From 1948 to 1949 the Jewish population of Israel increased from 300,000 to 1,000,000 Jews.

And Hashem, your G-d, will place all these curses upon your enemies and upon your adversaries, who pursued you. And you will return and listen to the voice of Hashem, and fulfill all His commandments, which I command you this day. And Hashem, your G-d, will make you abundant for good in all the work of your hands, in the fruit of your womb, in the fruit of your livestock, and in the fruit of your soil. For Hashem will once again rejoice over you for good, as He rejoiced over your forefathers, when you obey Hashem, your G-d, to observe His commandments and His statutes written in this Torah scroll, [and] when you return to Hashem, your G-d, with all your heart and with all your soul.

Jews now controlled 8,000 square miles (20,000 square Km) of Israel, compared to the 6,200 that the UN had originally planned. However, Yerushalayim remained under Jordanian Arab occupation. Around four thousand Jewish soldiers died in the war, and two-thousand Jewish civilians perished. Thousands of Arabs fled from their homes during the battles and most did not return.

Almost all of the Jews of Iraq (around 110,000) left with no possessions (estimated value $200 million) and made Aliyah to Israel. This was the end of Jewish community of Galus Bavel that began with the destruction of the First Beis HaMikdash.

Around 70,000 Jews left Yemen for Eretz Yisrael, starting in 1919 to 1950. This ended the Jewish community of Yemen with their return to Israel.

1953- 1955 / 5713-5715 – Building up the State of Israel, the Mitzva of Yishuv Eretz Yisrael is successful.

כִּ֚י הַמִּצְוָ֣ה הַזֹּ֔את אֲשֶׁ֛ר אָֽנֹכִ֥י מְצַוְּךָ֖ הַיּ֑וֹם לֹֽא נִפְלֵ֥את הִוא֙ מִמְּךָ֔ וְלֹֽא רְחֹקָ֖ה הִֽוא: לֹ֥א בַשָּׁמַ֖יִם הִ֑וא לֵאמֹ֗ר מִ֣י יַֽעֲלֶה לָּ֤נוּ הַשָּׁמַ֨יְמָה֙ וְיִקָּחֶ֣הָ לָּ֔נוּ וְיַשְׁמִעֵ֥נוּ אֹתָ֖הּ וְנַֽעֲשֶֽׂנָּה: וְלֹֽא מֵעֵ֥בֶר לַיָּ֖ם הִ֑וא לֵאמֹ֗ר מִ֣י יַֽעֲבָר לָ֜נוּ אֶל עֵ֤בֶר הַיָּם֙ וְיִקָּחֶ֣הָ לָּ֔נוּ וְיַשְׁמִעֵ֥נוּ אֹתָ֖הּ וְנַֽעֲשֶֽׂנָּה:

For this commandment which I command you this day, is not concealed from you, nor is it far away. It is not in heaven, that you should say, “Who will go up to heaven for us and fetch it for us, to tell [it] to us, so that we can fulfill it?” Nor is it beyond the sea, that you should say, “Who will cross to the other side of the sea for us and fetch it for us, to tell [it] to us, so that we can fulfill it?”

Rav Avraham Yeshayahu Karelitz (the Chazon Ish) on the 15^th of Cheshvan and Rav Isser Zalman Melter on the 10^th of Kislev, both died in 1953. They left behind a legacy of strong viable Torah communities, in Eretz Yisrael.

1956/ 5617- The Sinai war with Egypt was a successful war. Israel captured the Sinai from Egypt in eight days.

רְאֵ֨ה נָתַ֤תִּי לְפָנֶ֨יךָ֙ הַיּ֔וֹם אֶת הַֽחַיִּ֖ים וְאֶת הַטּ֑וֹב וְאֶת הַמָּ֖וֶת וְאֶת הָרָֽע: אֲשֶׁ֨ר אָֽנֹכִ֣י מְצַוְּךָ֘ הַיּוֹם֒ לְאַֽהֲבָ֞ה אֶת ה’ אֱלֹקיךָ֙ לָלֶ֣כֶת בִּדְרָכָ֔יו וְלִשְׁמֹ֛ר מִצְו‍ֹתָ֥יו וְחֻקֹּתָ֖יו וּמִשְׁפָּטָ֑יו וְחָיִ֣יתָ וְרָבִ֔יתָ וּבֵֽרַכְךָ֙ ה’ אֱלֹקיךָ בָּאָ֕רֶץ אֲשֶׁר אַתָּ֥ה בָא שָׁ֖מָּה לְרִשְׁתָּֽהּ:

Behold, I have set before you today life and good, and death and evil, inasmuch as I command you this day to love Hashem, your G-d, to walk in His ways, and to observe His commandments, His statutes, and His ordinances, so that you will live and increase, and Hashem, your G-d, will bless you in the land [Eretz Yisrael] to which you are coming to take possession of it. (Devarim 30:16-17)

The IDF invaded the Sinai on the 24^th of Cheshvan and conquered it in eight days! The Egyptian army was totally routed and fled in a completely disorganized manner, leaving large quantities of unused arms. Thousands of Egyptian soldiers were killed and taken prisoner. One hundred and seventy one Jewish soldiers were killed.

By 1958 there were 1,800,000 Jews in Eretz Yisrael.

1967/5727 – The IDF won a major victory in The Six Way War. Israel liberated the Golan, Yehuda/Shomron, Gaza, Sinai (again) and Yerushalayim. The Arabs in 1966 threatened to wipe out the Jews and the war broke out in 1967.

And Hashem will do to them, as He did to the Amorite kings, Sihon and Og, and to their land, [all of] which He destroyed. And [when] Hashem delivers them before you, you shall do to them according to all the commandment that I have commanded you. Be strong and courageous! Neither fear, nor be dismayed of them, for Hashem your G-d He is the One Who goes with you. He will neither fail you, nor forsake you. And Moshe called /yehoshua and said to him in the presence of all Israel, “Be strong and courageous! For you shall come with this people to the land which Hashem swore to their forefathers to give them. And you shall apportion it to them as an inheritance.” Hashem He is the One Who goes before you; He will be with you; He will neither fail you, nor forsake you. Do not fear, and do not be dismayed.” (Devarim 31: 4-8)

Yerushalayim was in complete Jewish control for the first time since Bar Kochba. Twenty-seven hundred square miles of Eretz Yisrael (Kever Rachel, Ma’arat HaMachpela Hevron, Kever Yosef Shechem) and 23,500 square miles of the Sinai, came under Jewish control. Seven hundred and seventy-seven Jewish soldiers were killed. In aftermath of the miraculous victory, many Jews developed into Ba’alei Teshuva; with thousands of Jews returning to Jewish Halacha observance.

1973/5733 – The Yom Kippur war was fought for twenty days, including the holidays of Succos and Shemini Azteres. Everyone feared for their lives in Israel; they thought that we would lose the war and the country, G-d forbid.

וַיְצַ֥ו משֶׁ֖ה אוֹתָ֣ם לֵאמֹ֑ר מִקֵּ֣ץ שֶׁ֣בַע שָׁנִ֗ים בְּמֹעֵ֛ד שְׁנַ֥ת הַשְּׁמִטָּ֖ה בְּחַ֥ג הַסֻּכּֽוֹת: בְּב֣וֹא כָל יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל לֵֽרָאוֹת֙ אֶת פְּנֵי֙ ה אֱלֹקיךָ בַּמָּק֖וֹם אֲשֶׁ֣ר יִבְחָ֑ר תִּקְרָ֞א אֶת הַתּוֹרָ֥ה הַזֹּ֛את נֶ֥גֶד כָּל יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל בְּאָזְנֵיהֶֽם: הַקְהֵ֣ל אֶת הָעָ֗ם הָֽאֲנָשִׁ֤ים וְהַנָּשִׁים֙ וְהַטַּ֔ף וְגֵֽרְךָ֖ אֲשֶׁ֣ר בִּשְׁעָרֶ֑יךָ לְמַ֨עַן יִשְׁמְע֜וּ וּלְמַ֣עַן יִלְמְד֗וּ וְיָֽרְאוּ֙ אֶת ה’ אֱלֹֽקיכֶ֔ם וְשָֽׁמְר֣וּ לַֽעֲשׂ֔וֹת אֶת כָּל דִּבְרֵ֖י הַתּוֹרָ֥ה הַזֹּֽאת: וּבְנֵיהֶ֞ם אֲשֶׁ֣ר לֹא יָֽדְע֗וּ יִשְׁמְעוּ֙ וְלָ֣מְד֔וּ לְיִרְאָ֖ה אֶת ה’ אֱלֹֽקיכֶ֑ם כָּל הַיָּמִ֗ים אֲשֶׁ֨ר אַתֶּ֤ם חַיִּים֙ עַל הָ֣אֲדָמָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֨ר אַתֶּ֜ם עֹֽבְרִ֧ים אֶת הַיַּרְדֵּ֛ן שָׁ֖מָּה לְרִשְׁתָּֽהּ:

And Moshe commanded them saying, at the conclusion of seven years during the Shemita celebration, during the holiday of Succos. When all Israel comes to appear before Hashem, your G-d, in the place He will choose, you shall read this Torah before all Israel, in their ears. Assemble the people: the men, the women, and the children, and your stranger in your cities, in order that they hear, and in order that they learn and fear Hashem, your G-d, and they will observe to do all the words of this Torah. And their children, who did not know, will hear and learn to fear Hashem, your G-d, all the days that you live on the land, to which you are crossing the Jordan, to possess. (Devarim 31:10-13)

On Yom Kippur, Egypt and Syria simultaneously attacked Israel on two fronts, in the North and in the South, Over 70,000 Egyptian soldiers attacked the 500 IDF soldiers along the Suez Canal. The IDF staged a successful counterattack and crossed the Suez into North Africa, and advanced into Syria within firing range of Damascus. The Arabs lost 18,500 soldiers and 2,100 tanks. The war was won after 20 days of fightiung, in which 2,522 Jewish soldiers were killed.

1991/5751 = gulf war, missles scuds from Iraq hit israel

For I know that after my death, you will surely become corrupted, and deviate from the way which I had commanded you. Consequently, the evil will befall you at the end of days, because you did evil in the eyes of the Lord, to provoke Him to anger through the work of your hands.

Who ate the fat of their sacrifices and drank the wine of their libations? Let them arise and help you! Let them be your shelter! (32:38)

רְא֣וּ | עַתָּ֗ה כִּ֣י אֲנִ֤י אֲנִי֙ ה֔וּא וְאֵ֥ין אֱלֹהִ֖ים עִמָּדִ֑י אֲנִ֧י אָמִ֣ית וַֽאֲחַיֶּ֗ה מָחַ֨צְתִּי֙ וַֽאֲנִ֣י אֶרְפָּ֔א וְאֵ֥ין מִיָּדִ֖י מַצִּֽיל:

See now that it is I! I am the One, and there is no God like Me! I cause death and grant life. I strike, but I heal, and no one can rescue from My Hand! (Devarim 32:39)

כִּֽי־אֶשָּׂ֥א אֶל־שָׁמַ֖יִם יָדִ֑י וְאָמַ֕רְתִּי חַ֥י אָֽנֹכִ֖י לְעֹלָֽם: אִם־שַׁנּוֹתִי֙ בְּרַ֣ק חַרְבִּ֔י וְתֹאחֵ֥ז בְּמִשְׁפָּ֖ט יָדִ֑י אָשִׁ֤יב נָקָם֙ לְצָרָ֔י וְלִמְשַׂנְאַ֖י אֲשַׁלֵּֽם: אַשְׁכִּ֤יר חִצַּי֙ מִדָּ֔ם וְחַרְבִּ֖י תֹּאכַ֣ל בָּשָׂ֑ר מִדַּ֤ם חָלָל֙ וְשִׁבְיָ֔ה מֵרֹ֖אשׁ פַּרְע֥וֹת אוֹיֵֽב: הַרְנִ֤ינוּ גוֹיִם֙ עַמּ֔וֹ כִּ֥י דַם־עֲבָדָ֖יו יִקּ֑וֹם וְנָקָם֙ יָשִׁ֣יב לְצָרָ֔יו וְכִפֶּ֥ר אַדְמָת֖וֹ עַמּֽוֹ:

For I raise up My hand to heaven, and say, ‘As I live forever.’ When I sharpen the blade of My sword, and My hand grasps judgment, I will bring vengeance upon My adversaries and repay those who hate Me. I will intoxicate My arrows with blood, and My sword will consume flesh, from the blood of the slain and the captives, from the first breach of the enemy.’ Sing out praise, O you nations, for His people! For He will avenge the blood of His servants, inflict revenge upon His adversaries, and appease His land [and] His people. (Devarim 32:40-43)
