Tim Boxer: Shaare Zedek Honors Great Women

Sculptor Lynn Syms, philanthropist Jean Gluck and radiologist Dr. Monique Katz were honored by the National Women’s Division of Shaare Zedek Medical Center of Jerusalem this month at the Museum of Jewish Heritage.

"To be an honoree is a mitzvah-like maror," Dr. Katz chuckled.

Barbara Gluck Weichselbaum paid tribute to her parents, Jean and Eugen Gluck, who sponsored the Department of General Pediatrics in the new Wilf Children’s Hospital at Shaare Zedek.

"The saying goes that behind every great man stands a great woman," Barbara said. "In our family the saying goes that for every great man stands a great woman beside him."

Marjorie Blenden, chair of the Women’s Division, related how Shaare Zedek medical team was the first to arrive after the earthquake struck Haiti in January.

"Our team delivered six babies. This was a field hospital, not used to delivering babies. They specialized in treating wounds.

"There were no cribs in the city so they put the babies in salad bowls."
