Tim Boxer: Three Get Kaufman Center Honors

As honoree Dick Beattie was called to the stage at the Kaufman Center gala last week at the 583 Park Ave. event space, he got sound advice from a couple of his longtime friends among the 320 guests: "Remember, don’t sing or perform."

It wasn’t the first time he was thus cautioned. He recalled what one of his daughters once asked: "Dad, when you think of a song in your head, is it on key then?"

Sean Hartley, director of the Center’s theater wing, presented an award to Beattie, a prominent attorney at Simpson Thacher & Bartlett, for his robust support of the Kaufman Center’s music education programs and its Merkin Concert Hall performances.

Bethany Millard and Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer also received awards. Millard is board chairman of the Kaufman Center and board president of the Manhattan Theater Club.

Bethany’s husband Robert, of Realm Partners investment company, told her, "It’s not so difficult to earn an award when you’re the chairman."

Founded in 1952 as the Hebrew Arts School for Music and Dance, the center was renamed the Kaufman Center in 1991. In 1996 Bethany Millard helped open the Center’s Special Music School, New York’s only public school for musically gifted children.

This being a gala fundraiser, Hartley announced that there are open violin cases at the door to accept additional donations.
