Intentionally, I exclude from this pep talk those already addicted
“My parents always warned me to look both ways before crossing a street. But now, I’m big and can do whatever I want. And I only look when I feel like it.” That is not being big; that is being kind of stupid.
For half a century and more, weed was considered cool. Part of it was the thrill of acting illegally. But, it’s stupid to fight for the ‘right’ to space out and dumb down. You’re creating blank timespans in your memory, and time gets lost. For the very rich, afraid to lose their money to democracy, this is a great idea to make popular. Addictions are opium to the People.
Recreationally drinking alcohol was never a Jewish sport. Islam even forbids all of it. There is nothing modern and progressive about having hard drinks. It is stupid. You waste your time, health, and brain power.
The same for smoking tobacco and being every day for hours on social media or couch surfing TV and Netflix.
Recreational sex with yourself or strangers just makes you lonelier.
Speaking or dressing indecently is not you, really.
Not all permissiveness gives a better life or world. See Radical Democracy.
Instead of frantically defending ‘your freedom to fail,’ try choosing smartly.
There are so many ways to spend our free time in ways that lifts us up. Like dancing, singing, gardening, demonstrating, writing creatively, etc.
To succeed, you might need (some) new friends who are not escapists.
Every moment is precious. Stop killing time. Stop numbing pain. Just cry.
Life isn’t futile if you want it. It’s up to you. You can do it. It will get better.
