True Friendship Lives Beyond Time and Space

True Friendship Lives Beyond Time and Space

(Reflection on the Special Haftorah to Torah Portion Bamidbar)

(Samuel 20:18-42)

True friendship is caring for one’s friend,

More than caring for oneself; such was the friendship

Between David and Jonathan, who risked

Their lives for each other in time of crisis.

What is disinterested love? Love that wants

Nothing in return but the well-being

Of one’s friend. What then makes life worth living?

A friendship that has moral fortitude;

It survives whatever challenges arise;

Recognizes its worth is beyond diamonds,

Gold and pearls. It is neither material

Or terminal but lasts beyond life.

How does one count one’s wealth in secure bonds?

In a journey beyond time and space that

Brings to life every true friendship story

As was that of David and Jonathan.
