Even G^d, our Role model, deviates from things He set out to do at first
Maimonides, the greatest Torah explainer after Moses, gave us this ingenious formula of how to handle Commandments and logic. We aren’t slaves or dogs that we could passively follow any command. But we are commanded. His synthesis is that we study all Commandments looking for reasons and then proceed to do them only because we are told so.
The latter is needed because human logic could erase any Commandment. Why not eat pig meat? Because pigs are unhealthy? So, we’ll raise healthy pigs. Why pray in the synagogue? Because there, you can concentrate better than at home? So, we’ll create homes where we can concentrate.
A second reason we can’t just obey is that many of the Commandments intersect. Then we must decide what takes priority. You can’t just say, ‘I was praying, so I couldn’t save someone’s life.’ We’re also commanded to try to save human lives, so that’s no excuse. Especially because the Sages teach us that saving a life takes precedence over almost everything.
A third reason that makes blind obedience simply wrong is that we could misunderstand the Commandments. If we switch off our internal logic and external reality checking, we could do the worst things in the name of G^d, and so soil G^d’s Good Name, which is the worst sin. A prime example is the religious who expect homosexuals to become heterosexual or to live without sexuality—you can’t be more off, offensive, or sacrilegious.

But then, how are Chukim (Commandments for which reasons escape us) different from what seem to be reasonable and rational Commandments, like not stealing and protecting the weak?
First of all, the Chukim remind us that all Commandments should be treated as not based on logic—as Maimonides explained.
Second of all, the open Chukim point to the Creat^r, Whose existence cannot be proven either. G^d is beyond our universe (and still close by). We have no need for a physical, demonstrable G^d, and He is not.
Thirdly, treating all Commandments as Chukim prevents every generation from needing to reinvent the wheel. There might be good reasons for the Commandments that are not so obvious, and our insight into them was checked and approved by many generations of wise teachers.
Fourthly, Chukim keep us humble. We’re not the B^ss, and we’re limited. And humility is such a great asset—almost as great as happiness.
Fifth, we can only do Chukim if no principle intersects, telling us we should not, like other Commandments, our human consciousness, morality, not soiling G^d’s Good Name, etc. Judaism doesn’t do Befehl ist Befehl, if only since Jewish ethics can’t be lower than the best ethics among the Gentiles.

Trust in G^d the Jewish way also means not leaving it all to Him. It rather means doing what’s reasonably our responsibility, but not, as a maniac or perfectionist, covering every other random or freak possibility. After that, we resolve not to worry and are at peace with leaving the rest to G^d. (Excluded are emergencies since crazy times ask for crazy measures.)

Like most of his readers, he believes in being friendly, respectful, and loyal. However, if you think those are his absolute top priorities, you might end up disappointed. His first loyalty is to the truth. He agrees that in a post-truth world, that's irrelevant, but then this is for the record. He will try to stay within the limits of democratic and Jewish law, but he won't lie to support opinions or people when don't deserve that. (Yet, we all make honest mistakes, which is just fine and does not justify losing support.) He admits that he sometimes exaggerates to make a point, which could have him come across as nasty, while in actuality, he's quite a lovely person to interact with. He holds - how Dutch - that a strong opinion doesn't imply intolerance of other views. *
Sometimes he's misunderstood because his wide and diverse field of vision seldomly fits any specialist's box. But that's exactly what some love about him. He has written a lot about Psychology (including Sexuality and Abuse), Medicine (including physical immortality), Science (including basic statistics), Politics (Israel, the US, and the Netherlands, Activism - more than leftwing or rightwing, he hopes to highlight reality), Oppression and Liberation (intersectionally, for young people, the elderly, non-Whites, women, workers, Jews, LGBTQIA+, foreigners and anyone else who's dehumanized or exploited), Integrity, Philosophy, Jews (Judaism, Zionism, Holocaust and Jewish Liberation), the Climate Crisis, Ecology and Veganism, Affairs from the news, or the Torah Portion of the Week, or new insights that suddenly befell him. *
Chronologically, his most influential teachers are his parents, Nico (natan) van Zuiden and Betty (beisye) Nieweg, Wim Kan, Mozart, Harvey Jackins, Marshal Rosenberg, Reb Shlomo Carlebach, and, lehavdil bein chayim lechayim, Rabbi Dr. Natan Lopes Cardozo, Rav Zev Leff, and Rav Meir Lubin. This short list doesn't mean to disrespect others who taught him a lot or a little. One of his rabbis calls him Mr. Innovation [Ish haChidushim]. Yet, his originalities seem to root deeply in traditional Judaism, though they may grow in unexpected directions. In fact, he claims he's modernizing nothing. Rather, mainly basing himself on the basic Hebrew Torah text, he tries to rediscover classical Jewish thought almost lost in thousands of years of stifling Gentile domination and Jewish assimilation. (He pleads for a close reading of the Torah instead of going by rough assumptions of what it would probably mean and before fleeing to Commentaries.) This, in all aspects of life, but prominently in the areas of Free Will, Activism, Homosexuality for men, and Redemption. *
He hopes that his words will inspire and inform, and disturb the comfortable and comfort the disturbed. He aims to bring a fresh perspective rather than harp on the obvious and familiar. When he can, he loves to write encyclopedic overviews. He doesn't expect his readers to agree. Rather, original minds should be disputed. In short, his main political positions are among others: anti-Trumpism, for Zionism, Intersectionality, non-violence, anti those who abuse democratic liberties, anti the fake ME peace process, for original-Orthodoxy, pro-Science, pro-Free Will, anti-blaming-the-victim, and for down-to-earth, classical optimism, and happiness.
