Voice of the Jewish News?
I was shocked to open up the Jewish News today and see prominently on their home page an article by “The Voice of the Jewish News” headed “Let the cameras into Gaza now”.
A quick read of this short piece, reveals the following quote:
“We want to see Jeremy Bowen on the BBC, reporting on the ground as Israeli-organized aid is received by Gazans. His presence, along with that of war reporters from across the spectrum, will bring vital accountability.”
Is this really the best advice this paper can give at this time? A time when a thousand falsehoods a day are thrown out by Hamas and it’s international network and picked up the mainstream media without questioning? Sending in Jeremy Bowen? What does the writer think Jeremy Bowen is going to say differently reporting within Gaza as opposed to outside Gaza?
After constant streams of false reports and reporting, we need a call to hold journalists accountable, we need a call for higher standards. The fact that a story is live, doesn’t mean you just quote any old source as quickly as you can to keep up with the reporting of other outlets. Just because the BBC qualifies that these reports come from the Gazan Health ministry, doesn’t exempt the BBC from trying to help their readers ascertain the truth. Is a terrorist organization trustworthy in a time of war, to quote without qualification?
At some point, cameramen and journalists will get their chance to salivate in Gaza and concoct whatever vicious incriminating stories they want about the wicked Israeli army. In the mean time, we need to hold journalists to account and expect better from a tax payer funded news provider called the BBC.
