What Did ICE Want with Rick Taylor?

It was supposed to be a routine vacation. Rick Taylor, a 71-year-old political consultant from Los Angeles, was returning from a family trip to Turks and Caicos when something strange happened at Miami International Airport.

Taylor’s career has spanned decades. He has worked on numerous high-profile campaigns. He served as Chief of Staff to former Los Angeles City Councilmember and County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky and held positions in the offices of City Council Member John Ferraro and Mayor Tom Bradley—becoming the youngest Chief of Staff in Los Angeles city history. Most recently, he managed Council Member Traci Park’s 2022 campaign on LA’s Westside, helping to secure what many called an upset victory in one of the city’s most competitive races.

He has also taught political communications at USC, UCLA, and Cal State Fullerton, and is widely regarded as one of California’s foremost public affairs consultants.

So, after decades spent advising politicians and navigating the back rooms of American power, Rick never thought he’d find himself at the mercy of US immigration officers. But that’s exactly what happened on June 20, 2025.

As he made his way through customs, officials asked Rick a simple question: “Are you from California?”

He answered truthfully: ‘Yes, Los Angeles.’ And then things went haywire.

An officer placed an orange sticker on his passport and directed him toward another line. The floor was marked with green dots. The room he entered was filled with mostly Spanish-speaking travelers. For the next 45 minutes, Rick Taylor — white, US-born, no criminal record, no red flags — was held without explanation. His belongings were searched. No questions were asked. No answers were given.

And then, without a word or explanation, he was released.

Wrong place, Wrong state, Wrong Shirt?

Rick couldn’t shake the feeling that he had been targeted for no good reason. He later told reporters that he wondered if his Obama-Biden T-shirt — packed away in his suitcase — might have drawn scrutiny. “I started asking myself what I had done wrong,” he said. “It was surreal.”

There were no warnings. No charges. Just a creeping sense of paranoia and powerlessness. It didn’t feel like a mistake. It felt like a message.

CBP: We Don’t Owe You an Explanation

According to Customs and Border Protection (CBP), secondary screening is routine and can happen “for a variety of reasons.” But they’re not obligated to share those reasons with the traveler. That might be a defensible position on paper, but in practice, it breeds distrust — especially when a 71-year-old US citizen with a long professional history in politics is silently detained.

Taylor, stunned by the experience, has been encouraged by CBP to file a complaint. But that’s cold comfort for someone who, for a brief moment, felt like a suspect in his own country simply for returning home.

Is This the New Normal?

Rick Taylor’s story taps into a deeper unease. If this can happen to him — a white, politically connected man from Los Angeles — what can happen to those with fewer protections? To people with accents? Different skin colors? Foreign-sounding names?

What began as an administrative procedure felt, to Rick, more like intimidation. Whether it was part of a larger dragnet operation or simply an unchecked use of authority, it sent a chilling message: even US-born citizens are not immune from scrutiny — especially if they come from the “wrong” place.

Final Thought

There’s no smoking gun here. No scandal. Just silence — the kind that leaves you wondering if you’ve stepped into a system that sees everyone as a potential threat.

Rick Taylor didn’t break any laws. He took a vacation with his family. He answered a simple question. And in response he got a small taste of the ways the machinery of homeland security can grind up even the most ordinary among us.

So again we ask: What did ICE want with Rick Taylor? Maybe we’ll never know. But maybe that’s the point.
