I listened to Trump’s words after the synagogue massacre. He harped on “unity.” In my mind’s eye I kept picturing the children in cages at the border torn apart from their mothers, fathers and families. And it occurred to me I have never once seen a picture of him holding his own youngest son’s hand, or hugging him. I have never seen him showing him how to play a game, or throw a ball. Unity? His own son is in a cage, separated by a barrier of indifference and apparent denial of paternal affection. Can anybody say they have ever heard the boy call Donald Trump, “Daddy?” No wonder, then, the children at the border are in cages. Truth is, we are very similar to that son and those down at the border. He has put all contra-Trump Americans in a cage, with edicts we are his “enemies.” Those neighbors from another country who come to our door desperately seeking refuge from torture and murder shall find we Jews, along with so many other Americans, may soon be powerless as advocates for their sanctuary. We already can’t open the gates of our own confinement to help them.
If Americans of non-Trumpian political stripe would shake the imprisoning bars of his Orwellian vision, liturgically often sanctified in his rally-masses with prayers for “the wall,” the edifice is already ominously built closer to home, in subtle forms of political obeisance such as the Senate’s genuflecting before his Supreme Court nomination. And, we Jews are only a small canary martyred yesterday in Trump’s cage. We are already being accused of being a Soros-funded Zionist machination to bring in an invading, colored hoard.
Even the ones dying from gun blasts out of the muzzles of AR 15s, as they go to their sixth grade geography classes, or fall prey while praying in a church or synagogue, hear the robotic, brainwashed, mantric chants: “We are the new children. You, Clintons and Obama, Biden, and Brennan and Clapper and Booker and Warren and Waters, Di Niro, and Holder are the ones to be locked up (along with us other fake-news liberals). Our President, Donald Trump, is pater familia, creating a new America in his image.”
And the apparent fact he’s an insensible ogre doesn’t matter to his clattering congregation. That’s what they love about him because it lets them off the hook of having to accept the reality that people of different cultures and ethnicities –as well as those of non-Christian religions – are entitled to be equal members of their American family.
