When Lips Do Not Move Automatically
Rabbi Sheshet was upset by somebody who quoted
what he had taught and most seriously blamed
him for having failed to have meticulously footnoted
the author’s identity, thereby causing him to be unnamed.
The rabbis say that lips of those who’ve died
when they are quoted posthumously virtually move.
On this opinion Rabbi Sheshet presumably relied,
deciding someone who did not do this to reprove.
While lips may not move literally post mortem somatically,
such movement may be generated by intelligence that’s relative, R.I.,
in people who misleadingly imply a text was written by themselves, as if “automatically,”
although it actually had been “authorized” by R.I., on which they had decided to rely.
From Julian Ungar’s Daf Ditty I learned that in Bekhorot 31, the talmud relates that Rav Sheshet was upset with his attendant for not mentioning his name when reporting his teaching, in accordance with the dictum that Rabbi Yochanan quoted in the name of Rabban Shimon bar Yochai. This stated that when one relates teachings in the name of the one who originally taught them, the original source of the teachings merits that his “lips quiver in the grave” and he is considered still alive and as though he himself is still teaching Torah).
