Where did “Backpage News from the Front” disappear to?!

GLEANED FROM THE HEBREW PRESS

Ten months ago, The Chelm Project began publishing weekly columns dubbed Backpage News from the Front (as was the case during the 2012 and 2014 Gaza wars). The column — albeit without photos and hyperlinks that enhance the Chelm-on-the-Med website — was also posted here in the Times of Israel.

Sparked by a Jihadist wave of violence that began on September 13, 2015 I said I would continue to write these weekly columns ‘for the duration’: weekly rather than twice-monthly columns that would ‘season’ the wildest and wackiest news that continues to appear in the Hebrew press even in the worst of times, shared by Chelm-on-the-Med in English, with touching, infuriating and downright bizarre aspects of heightened conflict. But, I never dreamed I would still be publishing weekly columns 10 months later…

Here we are in mid-July 2016. I’ve watched as the 156 stabbings, 96 shootings and 46 incidents of ramming of vehicles into crowds and one vehicle bombing were met with a yawn in the western world as long as Jihadist perpetrators were targeting Israeli Jews. And I’ve watched how stabbings, shootings and vehicle-rammings are occurring with increasing frequency and lethalness in the western world, which is far less prepared to deal with it — psychologically and tactically. As a result, Israel has become a minor front in a wider war of global proportions. Ironically, Israel is one of the safest places in the gathering storm…

While we Israelis will continue to combat terrorists — nothing new in this country that has been dealing with Palestinian violence against civilians since 1921* — the Chelm Project will be returning to its regular twice-a-month format.

A less cramped schedule will also free up time needed to review the material collected over the past eight years and apply the best gems, augmented by more subtext, in a book already in process…to be called A Rollicking Romp through the Wildest and Wackiest News Stores ‘Hiding’ in the Hebrew Press and What They Tell Us about Israeli Society and How It Ticks.

It will also allow me to publish occasional serious op-eds and commentary in this spot.

You can continue to enjoy the wildest and wackiest news ‘hiding’ in the Hebrew press, laced occasionally by humorous or incredible aspects of heightened conflict – on the Chelm-on-the-Med Online website at www.chelm-on-the-med.com.

* 1921??? If you don’t believe me, read REJECTIONISM at http://www.mythsandfacts.org/Conflict/6/index.html (which I researched and wrote for Myths and Facts). It traces all attempts at compromise over the past 95 years, revealing how Palestinians have systematically rejected any form of Jewish political expression – even rejecting a joint Jewish-Arab legislative council that would automatically give the Arab majority de facto domination over the Jews. It’s called the Passfield White Paper of 1930. Not only that. Every rejection of compromise right up to Camp David and Arafat’s launch of the 2000-2005 Terror War with its suicide bombers (and the current Jihadi Wave with its knives) has been accompanied by violence against Jewish civilians and society. It’s a pattern embedded in Palestinians’ political culture: Rejectionism laced with violence targeting Jewish civilians (i.e. terrorism).
