Who Should Israel Support in a War Over Greenland – The USA or NATO?

For all intents and purposes, President Donald Trump appears to be a man set on “owning” Greenland.

And for all intents and purposes, NATO has, to date, rebuffed US efforts.

NATO members have recently huddled together and, in an effort to dissuade President Trump, six of them have reportedly sent troops to this very large island, being their emblematic support for Denmark – its present “owner”.

Though at first sight it may seem rightfully Denmark’s, Greenland’s relations with Denmark have not always been amicable.

Reference is here made to Denmark’s assumptions that the Greenlanders, Innuits that they are, were inferior when compared with its populace: for example when the women of Greenland were fitted out with contraceptives without, in some cases, their knowledge or consent.

Any non-military agreement between the USA and Greenland, the majority of whom have recently expressed their wish for independence, may well end up being disputed by Greenland and the future of NATO may well – as it was when Trump was first elected President – be thrown off track.

NATO itself may fall apart.

The only reason Trump could possibly have for wanting Greenland must be that Putin and he, Trump, have agreed to carve up the map of Europe between them, with Putin getting Ukraine and Trump getting Greenland in return: a return to the days of the Balance of Power in Europe.

The above conclusion must be the case as Trump has, in effect, come back from several diplomatic sorties with nothing substantive – ie acceptable to Kiev and Europe – to offer.

Both Ukraine and Greenland are rich in rare earth’s and other resources, whatever is said about past history of Ukraine or the strategic importance of Greenland and “owning” them would be two beautiful feathers in the caps of Trump and Putin.

If the above guess is correct, Israel does not need to choose, as there are gains to be made if it chooses both the USA and Europe.

Care must be taken, however, when arming Europe as weapons can end up in the hands of Erdogan.

The president of Turkey has territorial ambitions in the Levant.

Further, the Europeans have left it very late to recognise the threat posed by Russia and may well be in need of battlefield-proven armaments which Israel is better positioned to supply than any other country.

By all accounts, though, Trump is determined and must be listened to.

Europe may be listened to, but it will have to come up with something better soon.
