Why Israel Must Defend the Druze of Syria: A Rabbinic Call to Conscience
There are moments in history when silence is betrayal. In fact The Talmud teaches in an unequivocal way that silence means acquiescence. Today, as the Druze community in Syria faces existential threats from radical forces, Israel must act, not as a political calculation but as a moral imperative. We are called, as Jews, to defend our allies, to uphold our God given values, and to remember the cost of standing idly by. The voices coming from Washington criticizing The Israeli Government for stepping into Syria and try to help the Druze are not only misguided, they lack any moral standing whatsoever. Many times in the past I was a critic of Prime Minister Netanyahu for trying to perpetuate an unsustainable status quo, for failing to act when times required it. Today I completely stand on the other side of this. Not only are the actions of Israel absolutely justified, they are absolutely necessary!
The Druze have long stood with the Jewish people and the State of Israel. In Israel, thousands of Druze citizens serve in the IDF. They defend Israel’s borders, command units, patrol volatile checkpoints, and give their lives for the collective security of The Jewish Homeland. They are not guests or bystanders, they are part of the very fabric of Israeli society. Their blood is mixed with ours in the soil of The Land.
In the face of such loyalty, how can we watch their brethren across the border face slaughter? To do so would be a betrayal not only of our allies, but of ourselves.
Some will ask, is this Israel’s fight? Should we risk diplomatic complications or military entanglement for another nation’s minority? My response is clear: this is not about politics, it is about principle. This is about whether the Jewish state remembers who we are and what we were created to be. “Lo ta’amod al dam re’echa”*—do not stand idly by the blood of your neighbor (Leviticus 19:16) is more than just a verse in The Torah, it is a sacred vow not to ever be bystanders. We were not made into a sovereign people just to protect ourselves. We were made sovereign so we could protect others.
To those who criticize Israel for taking decisive action in moments like this, I ask: have you learned nothing from recent history? The past twenty months since October 7 have taught us, if nothing else, that weakness invites violence, and silence breeds impunity. We know what happens when the world watches atrocity with indifference. We also know that when Jews defend themselves, and now others, the same voices that were quiet during our pain suddenly grow loud.
This is not a new story. We’ve seen this script before. In every generation, the Jewish people have been asked to justify their right to self-defense, their commitment to justice, their assertion of moral clarity. And in every generation, we’ve had to remind the world that our values do not fluctuate with the headlines.
Defending the Druze of Syria is not only a matter of gratitude, it is an act of Jewish destiny. It affirms that we will not be defined by victimhood or vengeance, but by vision. It says that we remember what it means to be stateless, powerless, abandoned and that we refuse to be passive in the face of another people’s destruction.
Israel must act. Quietly if possible, forcefully if necessary. But action is required. To our Druze brothers and sisters: you have stood with us. We will not abandon you now.
And to the critics: this is not about your approval. This is about our soul.
