Prime Minister Netanyahu mentioned that he’s looking into the idea of direct elections of our prime minister. It’s all spin.
Only once, Israel elected its Prime Minister. It was Bibi’s idea, to follow the US model. He got elected and immediately undid the law. Why?
The Israeli electorate needed no time or training to split its vote. While Bibi got elected, his party, the Likud, got a firm beating.
Or actually, it wasn’t like in the two-party system that many Bibi voters voted for the left. Rather, they voted more extremely to the right than for the bland middle-of-the-road Likud. There went his home base. A smaller Likud hampered his ability to form a coalition to his liking.
I seriously doubt if he would throw even the Likud under the bus just to become Prime Minister. No, his suggestion is just spin.
As I mentioned before, I have no problem with continuous voting. Bibi’s last political convulsions remind me of the deathbed of Spain’s Franco. No physician dared to concede or proclaim his death. So, toward the end, they even started cooling his body to slow down chemical processes that would lead to his demise. Bibi’s reign has come to an end. Not because of the fake prosecutions but because he has made too many mistakes, made too many enemies, and has thrown in his lot and salvation with the religious parties while Israel is ready for an end to religious dictatorship.
