Why JD Vance shouldn’t complain about the interceptors spent on Israel

Standing at the White House on June 18, answering Israeli cabinet ministers who had attacked the agreement his administration brokered with Tehran, JD Vance told them that over the previous three months, two-thirds of the defensive weapons that had protected Israel were built by American hands and paid for by American tax dollars. He added that anyone in Israel who believes their biggest problem is the American president needs to wake up and smell the reality of the situation their country is in.
The arithmetic behind that claim is real. In the twelve-day war of June 2025, American forces fired between 100 and 150 THAAD interceptors at roughly 12.7 million dollars each, about a quarter of the American stockpile, and the United States had procured 11 of them the year before.
Since the campaign that began in February, CNN reported in August that American forces have expended close to four fifths of their prewar THAAD stock and about half of their Patriots. Israel denies being critically low on its own stocks, and nobody outside the two governments can verify any of these figures.
It also matters which layer does the work; the popular picture is wrong. Iron Dome is built for short-range rockets and drones, the kind fired from Gaza, and it has almost nothing to do with an Iranian ballistic missile. David’s Sling covers the middle band. The threat that arrives from 1,500 kilometers away falls to Arrow 2 and Arrow 3, developed with the Iranian missile threat in mind, which engage inside and outside the atmosphere. Arrow is the scarce layer. It is also the one a Royal United Services Institute analysis reported by AFP in March put at 81 percent depleted against prewar stocks.
American THAAD and Patriot batteries absorbed hits that would have otherwise drawn down Israel’s scarce Arrow inventory. Without that layer, Israeli stocks run out faster and more missiles land sooner.
The Vice President’s calculations make sense on paper, but geopolitics is more than basic arithmetic. To see the true picture, the equation must expand beyond the immediate ledger to measure the long-term stakes.
Israel has never confirmed nor denied that it holds nuclear weapons. The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists estimates roughly 90 warheads, inferred from plutonium production and delivery systems rather than from anything Israel has said. What analysts have long called the Samson Option, a doctrine of last resort under which that arsenal would be used if the destruction of the state became certain, has never been officially acknowledged either. Neither the weapons nor the doctrine exists on paper anywhere public. Both are treated as real by every government in the region.
Israel is also the smallest of the nine nuclear-armed states by a wide margin. In World Bank figures, its land area is 21,640 square kilometers against 120,410 for North Korea, the next smallest. The others are not close. That is not a detail about maps. When facing a nuclear strike, the retaliatory logic of any nuclear power would be automatic and well understood.
The true asymmetry lies in a massive conventional attack. Continental powers like the United States, Russia, China, or India have the territorial depth to absorb extensive conventional destruction, relocate infrastructure, and maintain continuity of government.
Israel, by far the smallest of the nine nuclear-armed states and less than a fifth the size of North Korea, has no such luxury. Under a sustained conventional barrage, the point where physical destruction would threaten the very survival of the state would be reached infinitely faster.
That dynamic moves the existential threshold from an objective calculation to a subjective race against time. A last-resort doctrine is not triggered by a fixed metric of destroyed square kilometers or body counts; it rests entirely on the psychological perception of a leadership under extreme stress.
In a scenario where Iranian ballistic missiles strike in tandem with multi-front proxy barrages, the sheer volume of incoming devastation compresses decision-making to the breaking point. When seconds replace hours, the moral and strategic brakes against launching a nuclear response dissolve. Air defenses do not merely intercept missiles; they buy the psychological space required to keep a subjective judgment from becoming a fatal miscalculation.
The arithmetic leaves no room for error; the buffer is consumed at a rate the attacker dictates. During forty days of campaign, Iran fired roughly 650 ballistic missiles out of an estimated prewar arsenal of 2,500. Even with multi-layered defenses operating at nearly a 90 percent interception rate, the remaining volleys, including cluster munitions and conventional warheads, penetrated the shield, leaving 24 dead and over 7,000 injured.
Yet that apparent operational success came at a lethal cost: absorbing those strikes expended roughly 81 percent of Israel’s Arrow inventory. Replacing an interceptor takes months; firing one takes seconds.
With every volley, the geography remains unchanged, but the psychological and operational buffer thins. At the end of that accelerating drawdown sits the region’s only nuclear arsenal, where a decision forced by panic will not remain contained within its borders.
None of which would be Vance’s problem if the United States had been a bystander. It was not. On February 28, American and Israeli forces struck Iran together, in coordinated operations codenamed Epic Fury on the American side and Lion’s Roar on the Israeli one, hitting leadership, nuclear facilities and military sites. The missiles that fell on Israeli cities over the following weeks were the answer to an operation Washington helped launch.
That shared ownership makes the Vice President’s financial complaint entirely shortsighted. In calculating the price of interceptor batteries, the administration treats aid as a balance-sheet loss rather than a containment policy. If American THAAD and Patriot systems had not absorbed those strikes, Israel’s depleted Arrow reserves would have forced a faster escalation toward its doctrine of last resort.
Any resort to nuclear weapons in the Middle East would not remain a localized event. As atmospheric modeling published in Nature Food and the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists warns, even a limited employment of around 100 nuclear weapons against urban and industrial centers could loft millions of tons of soot into the stratosphere. A soot injection exceeding five teragrams would trigger global climate disruption, severe agricultural collapse, and mass food shortages across the globe.
In protecting Israeli skies, Washington is not merely funding an ally; it is buying immunity from an environmental and global economic cataclysm that would cripple the United States alongside the rest of the world.
The debate over interceptor inventories is not a dispute over foreign aid or diplomatic leverage; it is a calculation of survival dynamics under extreme time compression. In Israel, a nation with no territorial depth, air defense systems do not merely protect infrastructure, they purchase the psychological room required for a cornered leadership to verify, consult, and hesitate before reaching for its ultimate resort.
If Washington treats that shield as an exorbitant bill rather than an essential containment buffer, it misreads the nature of the risk. Withdrawing that protection does not insulate the United States from a distant conflict. It simply forces a nuclear power with nowhere to retreat toward an outcome that neither JD Vance nor anyone else on this planet is prepared to endure.
