Why Jews and Christians Must Stand Together — A Covenant and a Conscience

Across continents and centuries, Jews and Christians have walked distinct paths yet shared a story. It is a story marked by both light and darkness, by shared sacred texts and enduring values, but also by wounds that have not fully healed. Today, as antisemitism surges and Israel’s legitimacy faces relentless challenge, that story calls us to something urgent and profound: to stand together not merely as allies of convenience, but as partners in purpose.

The bond between Jews and Christians is not a historical artifact — it is the root of much of our moral vision. Christianity emerged from within the Jewish people, carrying forward the ethical teachings, the reverence for life, and the hope for a redeemed world that Judaism first proclaimed. The idea that history is purposeful, that humanity is called to justice and mercy, and that human dignity is sacred, all of these trace back to a story that began with Israel.

That story is not over. Its promises endure. And because our histories are intertwined, so too are our responsibilities. We are not two communities that merely share a past; we share a present and a future. And that future will be shaped by whether we choose partnership or indifference.

Honesty is essential if partnership is to mean anything. Too often, Christian history has been marred by contempt for Jews, expressed in persecution, forced conversion, segregation, and violence. Even theological language was twisted into tools of oppression. These sins cannot be undone, but they can be acknowledged. And from that acknowledgement can come a commitment to something better.

That commitment is needed now. Antisemitism, the world’s oldest hatred, is again rising across the globe. It thrives in conspiracy theories online, in vandalized synagogues and threatened communities, and increasingly in efforts to delegitimize Israel itself. It masquerades as moral critique while denying the Jewish people their right to self-determination. And it is not just a Jewish problem — it is a human problem. Societies that tolerate hatred against Jews always find their moral foundations crumbling in other ways, too.

The Jewish people’s right to a secure homeland is not up for debate. It is the moral response to centuries of statelessness, exile, and genocide. It is the recognition that a people who have endured expulsion, pogroms, and the Holocaust must have the right to live in peace and security in their ancestral home.

Affirming that right does not mean endorsing every policy or ignoring Palestinian suffering. Compassion and justice are not mutually exclusive. We can support human dignity for all people while also insisting that Israel’s existence is non-negotiable. The attempt to deny the Jewish people their homeland is not political critique — it is the newest expression of an ancient hatred.

Some may ask why Christian support for Israel and the Jewish people matters at all. The answer is twofold. First, Christianity is a global force, one that shapes public opinion, influences governments, and reaches into nearly every society. When Christians speak clearly against antisemitism and affirm Jewish dignity, it has real impact.

Second, this solidarity is not charity. It is fidelity, to our shared moral heritage, to the story that shaped both our communities, and to the belief that God’s promises and purposes remain alive in history. Silence in the face of hatred would betray that heritage.

For Jews, too, this moment offers a chance to see Christian partnership not as paternalism, but as repentance transformed into friendship. It is an invitation to build a future together, one rooted in mutual respect, not theological conquest; in shared purpose, not historical guilt.

Our world faces challenges that demand this partnership. Iran’s genocidal threats, terrorism against civilians, the rise of boycotts and delegitimization campaigns — all of these require a united moral response. And they require it not only from politicians and diplomats, but from faith communities that refuse to accept hatred as inevitable.

Together, Jews and Christians can:

  • Expose and oppose antisemitism in all its forms. Whether it appears in political movements, social media, or academia, it must be named and resisted.
  • Defend Israel’s legitimacy. Support for Israel’s right to exist and thrive is not a partisan stance — it is a stand for justice and historical truth.
  • Model moral courage. In a world quick to compromise on principle, our shared commitment to human dignity must remain firm.
  • Build trust through relationships. Dialogue, shared learning, and collaboration can heal old wounds and strengthen common purpose.

We live in a fractured age, divided by ideology, culture, and memory. But within this moment lies a profound opportunity: to demonstrate that Jews and Christians, once separated by suspicion and scarred by history, can stand together as partners in shaping a more just future.

Our shared past has been marked by pain, but our shared future can be marked by purpose. The story that began in ancient times, the story of a people called to bless the world, continues still. And in this generation, it calls us to stand side by side: to defend life, to oppose hatred, and to insist that hope is stronger than fear.

In an era of rising darkness, this partnership can be a light. And if we walk together, bound by conscience, strengthened by history, and united by hope, then our solidarity will speak louder than any hatred ever could.
