World Response to the Video Clips Of two Emaciated Israeli Hostages
Recent propaganda videos of two Gaza hostages—Rom Braslavski, held by Palestinian Islamic Jihad, and Evyatar David, held by Hamas—depict both in a deliberately caused, horrifyingly emaciated state. These images have caused Western leaders, including Starmer of Britain and Macron of France, to squirm as they try to reconcile this barbaric terror with their recent calls for unconditional recognition of Palestine. Their distressed reactions suggest they are still shocked by such brutality and troubled by groups claiming to lead the Palestinians. However, these images are hardly surprising; they are consistent with the conduct of Hamas and Jihad before, during, and after October 7, 2023. Far from being ashamed, these groups are proud of their actions—as evidenced by their publication of the clips. So far, Prime Minister Carney of Canada, another leader advocating for a Palestinian state, has not responded. This stark disconnect among Western leaders underscores the widening gulf between misguided efforts to promote peace and the brutal realities on the ground.
What is even more disturbing—and even less surprising—is the deafening silence from the pro-Palestinian camp, including Al Jazeera, regarding these atrocities. If Palestinian leadership genuinely prioritized establishing a negotiated Palestinian state, they could simply condemn Hamas and Jihad’s actions, denounce the barbarity, and express a willingness to achieve peace through negotiations and coexistence with Israel. Instead, their silence suggests that the primary goal—and indeed obsession—of large swathes and possibly the entire dominant pro-Palestinian establishment is to support the destruction of Israel—by any means necessary—even if that approach hinders progress toward a Palestinian state.
Regarding Gaza’s dire situation, amid the distressing images of destruction and reports of casualties, the blame must be directed pointedly at Hamas and its supporters. The destruction caused by the war—and its ongoing perpetuation—is a direct result of Hamas’s attack on Israel and their continued hostage-taking. Moreover, Hamas constructed an extensive network of attack tunnels connected to many homes above ground and deliberately embedded itself within the Gaza civilian population. These policies have knowingly placed both the Gaza population and their infrastructure at significant risk in the conflict with Israel.
Wouldn’t it be refreshing if Western leaders assessed the situation more accurately? Conversely, calls for an unconditional Palestinian state only serve to embolden pro-Palestinian Islamic extremists and prolong suffering for both sides.
