Mamad: Rhymes with facade. That’s your hebrew word for today. Easy to say, crucial to have in your home.
Do you have one? A safe room, that is: A cemented-walls-special-glass-metal-closing-windows, specially built to protect the family in time of missile attack.
Not a standard room in most suburban homes? Ah, but it is the norm here in Israel, where the world seems to have become complacent about our families having to take cover from incoming missiles. If your den isn’t an undercover mamad, or your home was built a few decades ago, you’ll have to run to a shared safe-room in the neighborhood.
Imagine 3:00 in the morning as your enemy’s fave time to toss a few deadly missiles your way. The siren blares, rousing you from sleep, to stumble wearily to wake up the others and use the 1.5 available minutes to get to safety. Those lucky enough to have a MAMAD like ours, in our home, will enjoy relative comfort, depending on the number of souls who gather together. Sometimes, I admit, it feels cozy, that feeling of togetherness and supposed safety. But we aren’t losing sight of the very real threat to our lives.
Who’s the enemy? A few months ago we had two attacks within one day, from different borders. Houthis, Hamas, it’s a rough neighborhood for little Israel. Ten minutes later, the all clear sign is given and we can go back to life / sleep / whatever your hyped-up brain can manage. The facade of peace blankets us once again, at least for awhile.
But now it’s different: Iran. Since Thursday night, Israel has made it clear that we will not stay silent in the face of Iran’s threat to our existence. PM Netanyahu has said, and planned, for decades – urging the world to recognize and demolish the existential threat on the world stage. Seems that although his words were heard, it is now up to us – with some tacit support of our allies – to take care of business.
So now you know – keep following the news; continue to reach out to friends and loved ones here in Israel. We do need your support and know that you are with us in spirit. Do what you can to tell others the truth of Israel’s defensive efforts to rid the world of this Iranian regime.
We will emerge, with God’s help, stronger and better. United in our resolve, steadfast in might and strong in stature. While our home front seeks shelter in the MAMAD, our leaders make responsible decisions and our brave military is all of us, fighting for tomorrow.
