The 250-Year Fracture: Will America Choose Liberty or Its Own Decay?

As the United States approaches its historic 250th anniversary this July 4th, there is profound cause for celebration. At its zenith, the American experiment has stood as a global beacon for democracy, individual liberty, and human dignity. For generations of Jews, this nation offered something genuinely miraculous in the scope of diaspora history: a sanctuary where they could live openly, contribute fully, and help construct a society rooted in the sacred freedom of conscience.

For the Jewish people, this reality was never ordinary. It was extraordinary. After millennia spent barred, burdened, expelled, and persecuted across the globe, America extended a rare and revolutionary promise—that Jews could belong without surrendering who they were. This promise fostered one of the most vibrant, accomplished, and influential Jewish communities in modern history. It is a legacy that must never be taken for granted.

But if we are to honor America’s founding, we must speak with absolute, unvarnished honesty: The very freedoms that made America great are increasingly being weaponized to hollow it out from within.

The Anatomy of the New Antisemitism

We now awaken daily to a relentless barrage of vitriol. Synagogues are threatened. Jewish students are systematically targeted and isolated on elite college campuses. Jewish families are harassed in broad daylight on American streets. Antisemitic rhetoric is normalized in classrooms, celebrated at rallies, and echoed within the halls of public office. What was once confined to the fever swamps of the radical margins has been fast-tracked into the mainstream.

Crucially, the mechanics of this hatred have mutated. In eras past, the antisemite sought merely to inflict physical harm. Today, the strategy is far more insidious: it relies on inverted propaganda designed to morph the victim into the villain, thereby manufacturing a moral justification for violence.

Modern antisemitism does not merely assault Jewish bodies; it assaults the concept of objective truth. It distorts language, hijacks social justice narratives, and manipulates imagery to disguise systemic hatred as moral courage.

Under the guise of “free speech” and “activism,” a dangerous license has taken root:

  • The license to intimidate communities, threaten houses of worship, and resurrect ancient blood libels.

  • The license to accept funding from hostile foreign regimes and actors with ties to global terror networks, using those resources to transform universities into engines of ideological indoctrination.

  • The license to use protest as a proxy for lawlessness—blocking thoroughfares, menacing neighborhoods, burning American flags, and openly cheering for the destruction of the United States and its democratic allies, chief among them Israel.

  • The license to exploit emerging technologies—utilizing AI-generated deepfakes and algorithmic echo chambers—to outpace reality and dissolve the boundary between fact and fiction.

This is not the exercise of liberty. This is the acceleration of societal decay.

The Grotesque Inversion of Reality

The Jewish people possess a long, painful memory regarding the distinction between freedom and lawlessness. We know precisely what happens when a society loses its moral discipline and allows state-sanctioned slander to go unanswered. History has proven, time and again, that when truth is abandoned, the Jews are the canary in the coal mine.

I felt the profound weight of this truth recently during this past weekend’s Shavuot retreat. Surrounded by the beautiful diversity of our people—Jews of every background, age, and observance level—we came together in prayer, song, and dance. There was an undeniable holiness in the air, a sincere humanity in the prayers, and an unadulterated joy in the dancing.

In that space, the sheer absurdity of modern anti-Jewish (anti-Zionist) propaganda became blindingly clear. The libels weaponized against us are not just false; they are grotesque inversions of reality. They take the world’s singular Jewish nation and hold it to a vicious double standard applied to no other country on earth, using that manufactured metric to delegitimize its very right to exist. They take a people who gather in prayer and study, who cherish life, and paint them as monsters. They take a nation forced to defend itself against genocidal terror and brand it the aggressor.

The crimes of the Nazi regime represented pure evil. But the architects of today’s psychological warfare are attempting something uniquely sinister: they do not just seek our physical destruction; they seek to erase our moral identity. By projecting their own racist and genocidal impulses onto the Jewish people and the Jewish state, they aim to ensure that when they move against us, the world will not just look away—it will applaud.

A Call to Action for Western Civilization

Therefore, America’s quarter-millennium milestone cannot be a moment of hollow patriotism or passive celebration. It must be a stark warning and an urgent call to action.

A nation incapable of defending objective truth cannot long defend liberty. A society that treats Israel—the lone democracy and indigenous homeland of the Jewish people—as a global pariah while rationalizing the actions of terrorist regimes is not merely politically confused; it is morally unmoored.

America’s capacity for greatness remains intact, but survival is not guaranteed by inertia. It demands that decent people cease apologizing for the truth and begin aggressively defending it—in our school boards, our universities, our courtrooms, and our public squares.

The choice before the American republic is binary:

  1. Preserve truth and the rule of law, ensuring that propagandists funded by foreign actors with ties to terrorism are not permitted to spread lies and libels, subverting justice and the legal system.

  2. Surrender to a trajectory where hatred is normalized, disinformation is rewarded, and the loudest voices of destruction are mistaken for progress.

For the Jewish community, and for anyone who wishes to preserve the foundations of the free world, there is no room for neutrality. We must speak plainly. We must defend America’s foundational promise, and we must fiercely defend Israel—because the assault on one is inextricably linked to the demolition of the other.

The next 250 years will either belong to those possessing the moral courage to preserve authentic liberty, or to those who will exploit that liberty until it collapses under the weight of its own abuse. We have inherited a monumental legacy. The defining question of our generation is whether we possess the fortitude to keep it alive.
