About Me
Dr. Ivan Gulas, Ph.D., ABPP, is a board-certified clinical psychologist with decades of clinical experience, including more than twenty years on the faculty of Harvard Medical School. A childhood survivor of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, he brings both personal and professional depth to his writing on trauma and recovery. He graduated with honors from Boston University and completed his doctoral studies at Dartmouth College and Ohio University, with his clinical internship at Beth Israel Hospital / Harvard Medical School. Working across a broad range of treatment modalities—psychodynamic, cognitive, and behavioral therapies, as well as neuropsychological evaluation—he tailored his approach to the needs of each patient. He later transitioned from clinical practice to found a medical technology company, where he drew directly on his psychological background to develop the first photorealistic digital facial-expression solution. The work earned him a U.S. patent and became the core technology that took the company public on NASDAQ; it was used in major visual-effects-driven feature films from the late 1990s onward. Venture funding enabled the company to acquire one of Los Angeles's legendary visual post-production studios, where he took a leadership position until the sale of his interest. He remains active in writing, publishing, and nonprofit work. His books include Changing the Odds: A New Understanding of PTSD and the Path to Recovery, Asylum Without Walls, and Senior Sex: Intimacy and Isolation. A member of the Producers Guild of America, he has served as producer and executive producer of films, television series, and live broadcast events. He is the recipient of the Humanitarian of the Year Award from the Emanuel Foundation for Hungarian Culture, a charity founded by actor Tony Curtis in 1987 to restore Jewish heritage sites in Hungary.
