An Open Letter to Vice President Vance from an IDF Soldier

Dear Vice President Vance,

I am not an expert in American politics. But as an American-Israeli citizen, I am deeply concerned by your decision to blame Israel and the war with Iran for the Republican defeat in the recent midterm elections.

As a Holocaust scholar, I cannot help thinking of the accusations made against Jews in Germany after World War I. Nazi leaders blamed Jews for Germany’s defeat and for the economic hardship that followed. What frightens me most is how many intelligent people can be persuaded to believe such falsehoods.

Of course, wars are terrible. And yes, wars can shift political fortunes. I can also understand why many Americans are skeptical about the current war with Iran. It is understandable that ordinary people may worry more about the price of oil than about the threat of a nuclear-armed Iran. I serve as a combat soldier in the IDF and have lost close friends in battle. I know the heavy price of war. Its cost is measured first in human lives, and it is far greater than the economic cost.

But the question is: What kind of leader do you want to be? Will you be a populist who rides a wave of anger and resentment, or will you stand firm and tell the truth? These are the moments that define leaders.

The United States and Israel share common values and Israel has proven to be the United States trusted allie. After the horrific attacks of October 7, Israel showed the world that it would not surrender to terror and evil. Knowing that we could rely on the United States helped Israel change the Middle East for the better. Radical Islamic terrorist organizations have been dealt major blows, and the Iranian regime, the world’s leading state sponsor of terror, has been put in its place. Unfortunately this war is taking longer than expected, and the cost has been great. But nothing short of victory will bring peace to the region.

The United States is facing one of the most critical moments in its history. Millions of young Americans are being brainwashed by charismatic socialists and Islamist radicals. Both Republicans and Democrats must confront these dangerous movements, which are becoming a threat to the United States. Instead of blaming Israel and the war with Iran, I urge you to learn from the mistakes that led to the midterm defeat and make the necessary changes in time for the 2028 presidential election.

The people of Israel respect and support the United States. We understand that our struggle against radical Islam is not only for Israel’s sake; it is also for the safety of the American people and the entire free world. We are willing to risk our lives for your safety and your children’s future.

Vice President Vance, please don’t let us down.
