Without Independent Accountability, Israel Cannot Heal — or Defend Itself

In the time since the trauma of October 7th, Israelis have shown extraordinary resilience. Communities shattered by terror are rebuilding themselves from the ground up. Soldiers have returned to the battlefield again and again. Families of the murdered, the kidnapped, and the displaced have carried burdens no society should ever be asked to shoulder.

But one thing remains absent: real accountability from those entrusted with the nation’s security.

Instead of a transparent reckoning, Israelis have been offered a patchwork of internal probes, military debriefs, and committees appointed by the very officials whose decisions are under question. This approach is not only insufficient—it is profoundly dangerous.

Leadership Cannot Self-Investigate

A system that investigates itself is a system preparing its own absolution.

The IDF cannot credibly assess failures of political leadership. A committee appointed by the prime minister cannot credibly scrutinize the prime minister. And a coalition whose members may themselves bear responsibility cannot be the arbiter of its own exposure.

Only a fully independent, state-appointed commission—with broad investigative authority, real subpoena power, and genuine insulation from political influence—can provide the truth Israelis deserve. Anything less is a whitewash. The public knows this. Their leaders know it too.

Accountability Strengthens the IDF, Not the Opposite

Some warn that investigations will demoralize the army. The opposite is true.

The IDF’s strength has always flowed from the public’s trust in it. Soldiers who risk their lives deserve to know that the systems meant to protect them—and the leaders meant to guide them—are held to the highest standard of scrutiny. Accountability does not weaken the IDF. It honors it. It reinforces the moral contract between soldiers and the state they defend.

Israel’s Leaders Must Confront Their Moment of Truth

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Senior intelligence officials. Top IDF commanders. Key cabinet ministers. All were part of cascading failures that allowed October 7th to unfold. Some ignored warnings, some dismissed concerns, and some acted out of hubris. Yet the public does not—and cannot—know the full story until a genuinely independent process begins.

This is not about political point-scoring. It is about safeguarding Israel’s future.

October 7th was not merely a military failure. It was a systemic collapse in governance, intelligence, preparedness, and leadership. Individuals responsible for those failures cannot also be the ones who decide who is investigated, what is investigated, when, and how.

Israelis Deserve the Full Truth

The families of the murdered and kidnapped deserve answers. The soldiers who rushed into battle deserve accountability. And every Israeli citizen deserves a government whose leaders face consequences when they fail catastrophically.

Israelis are loyal, resilient, and united in crisis. But loyalty is not blind. It demands honesty. It demands responsibility. And it demands that those in power be held to the same standards of courage expected of every soldier on the front lines.

The Time for an Independent Commission Is Long Overdue

Israel cannot afford half-measures, internal reviews, or political theater. A nation that avoids confronting its failures is a nation preparing to repeat them.

It is time—far past time—for a truly independent commission. Anything less will not simply fall short.

Anything less will be unforgivable.
