Birthright Israel: How a Generation Finds Identity, Community, and Purpose
In a world where antisemitism is rising and Jewish identity is under threat, programs that deepen connection to heritage have never been more critical. Last night, Miami’s Rubell Museum hosted a 25th-anniversary celebration of Birthright Israel, highlighting the program’s transformative impact on Jewish youth worldwide. Birthright Israel has been offering free, fully funded 10-day trips to Israel for young Jewish adults since 1999, with the mission of immersing participants in Israel’s history, culture, and contemporary life, while strengthening Jewish identity, community connection, and confidence.
Birthright trips go far beyond sightseeing. Participants explore historic and spiritual sites, from the Western Wall to the streets of the Old City of Jerusalem, experience Israel’s landscapes from Masada to the Dead Sea, hike deserts, and live in vibrant cities like Tel Aviv, meeting Israeli peers, sharing meals, and experiencing modern Israeli society firsthand. Since October 7, 2023, trips have also included visits to impacted communities, volunteering programs, and meetings with survivors and families of hostages, giving participants a deeper understanding of Israel’s resilience and the realities of the Jewish people today.
At last night’s Miami Rubell Museum event, the program’s impact came alive through the stories of alumni. Mila Brener, a 20-year-old college student from Los Angeles, described her post-October 7 trip: “After Oct. 7, all I could think about was my savta. Being in Israel, seeing the people and places I’d read about my whole life, I found a renewed sense of pride and purpose in being Jewish.”
Amanda Cetina, who volunteered in Israel after conflict, shared, “Israel needed me. It wasn’t a choice. I had to come.” Jacob Rosen, 22, who participated in a post-war volunteer program, reflected, “Seeing the resilience of the people and communities firsthand made me more committed to my Jewish identity than ever before.” These stories illustrate how Birthright transforms heritage and identity into confidence, community connection, and lifelong commitment.
The scale of Birthright’s impact is enormous. Since its founding, over 900,000 young Jewish adults have participated, with 43,000 visiting Israel since October 7, 2023, and the 2025–2026 winter season expecting up to 10,000 participants across trips, volunteer programs, and internships. Birthright is not just a trip — it is a classroom of the heart, shaping leaders, activists, and engaged members of the Jewish community worldwide.
The program’s importance is heightened in light of rising antisemitism. Recent incidents, including the human-swastika formation at Branham High School in San José and other attacks against Jewish students, demonstrate how urgently young Jews need connection, context, and pride in their identity. Birthright offers that grounding: a direct link to history, community, and moral clarity. Alumni leave with a sense of belonging, resilience, and the tools to confront hatred and ignorance with knowledge and confidence.
In the face of these challenges, Birthright Israel and events like last night’s Rubell Museum celebration show that Jewish identity is alive, strong, and capable of inspiring the next generation. These experiences do more than educate — they empower, connect, and transform, providing young Jews with the confidence and pride to face today’s world with purpose and commitment.
