Bring Me a Gift

I am not a human king

who makes a harsh decree

who decides, or needs convincing

to notice, to redeem

I can’t show you my face

or tell you my name

but I can hug your lost children

in a way I can’t explain

I’m not a human beloved

who knocks impatiently on your door

but I feel when you are lovesick

when you search for me

I can’t save your people

with my hand.

But I’ll promise to be with you,

And ask your brother to help you,

And put my hand on your shoulder as I tell you,

He’ll be so happy to see you.

I can’t be a human parent

who shields your life with mine

and in good, ordinary times

gives you the tiniest punishment out of love…

But if you come close

I will bless you

Caress you with חֵן

Anoint you with light

And if you open your eyes,

I can show you oceans and planets,

And if you open your heart,

I can you show miracles of generosity

I am not a human king

who needs a palace or a throne

But I need your heart to be moved

With holiness

So bring me a gift

Bring me kindness and compassion

And righteousness and justice

Bring me a gift

I am the king

Who loves צְדָקָ וּמִשְׁפָּט
