Choosing recovery

Addiction knows no bounds when it comes to age, gender or life circumstances. It can take the best people prisoner, and it is a tremendous fight to break free of its shackles. But if someone is ready to face it head on and has the right support, addiction does not have to be a life sentence.

Sasha* is a 35 year-old single mother, living in Los Angeles without family nearby, who has been struggling with substance abuse for several years. She was in a serious relationship which ended suddenly, and the drugs felt even more necessary to escape her heartbreak. Feeling alone and ashamed, Sasha finally worked up the courage to call her mom, confiding that she had been using cocaine on a daily basis and she was in desperate need of support. Sasha’s mother has a friend who benefited from Amudim’s support in the past, whom she called for our number. Together, mom and daughter reached out.

Making the first call for help is never easy, but Sasha showed courage and a will to fight for herself. During the initial phone call, Sasha answered some hard questions about her past experiences to help her case manager better understand her struggles. He applauded Sasha for her bravery and vulnerability and assured her that Amudim would be there to guide and support Sasha along every step of the journey ahead.

We referred Sasha to an inpatient treatment center that fit her needs and worked with her insurance company to ensure financial coverage. The case manager supported Sasha through the intake process, validating her fears about starting the process and the challenges ahead. Sasha is now one month into her 90 day program, and she is finally getting the assistance she needs to win this difficult battle.
