CIP marks 90 years with benefit mega-show at Sala São Paulo featuring stars
The Ministry of Culture and the Congregação Israelita Paulista (CIP) will present, on August 16 at 7 p.m. at Sala São Paulo, the benefit concert “Um לugar Para Nós – From Broadway to Brazil,” a grand celebration of music, memory, and cultural diversity marking the 90th anniversary of Brazil’s most traditional Jewish institution.
Bringing together some of the greatest voices and personalities of Brazilian musical theater, the production will feature special appearances by Thiago Abravanel, Marcos Veras, Assucena, Felipe Grytz, and Avi Bursztein, alongside a cast of six artists who helped shape the recent history in Brazil: Alessandra Maestrini, Bruna Guerin, Giulia Nadruz, Kiara Sasso, Samantha Schmütz, and Soraya Ravenle. The evening will be hosted by Dan Stulbach, accompanied by the São Paulo Big Band and Orchestra.
With general direction by Gustavo Barchilon, musical direction by Antonio de Arruda Ribeiro, script and curation by Claudio Erlichman, lighting design by Maneco Quinderé, costumes by Fábio Namatame, and production by BARHO Produções, the show offers an emotional journey through the history of musical theater—from its Broadway origins to its establishment as one of Brazil’s most popular cultural genres.
The repertoire will pay tribute to some of the greatest Jewish composers who shaped the history of global musical theater, including Irving Berlin, George and Ira Gershwin, Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Sondheim, Jerry Herman, and Burt Bacharach. Musicals revisited will include West Side Story, Chicago, Cabaret, Funny Girl, Hello, Dolly!, My Fair Lady, Yentl, and Fiddler on the Roof.
The show will also honor Victor Berbara and Oscar Ornstein, who in the 1950s brought the first major Broadway-inspired productions to Brazil.
The title “Um לugar Para Nós” (“A Place for Us”) comes from a verse in the song “Somewhere” from West Side Story. The substitution of the letter “L” with the Hebrew letter ל (Lamed) carries symbolism tied to learning, purpose, and spiritual —values that resonate deeply with CIP’s nine-decade history of commitment to ethics, culture, dialogue, and human dignity.
By connecting the legacy of Jewish artists who helped create Broadway with the pioneers who introduced the genre to Brazil, Um לugar Para Nós – From Broadway to Brazil celebrates the transformative power of art, immigration, and cultural exchange, reaffirming the importance of music as a vehicle of memory, belonging, and hope.
More than a performance, the evening will be a meeting of generations, traditions, and stories that helped shape both American and Brazilian culture, in a special celebration of the 90 years of the Congregação Israelita Paulista.
