As soon as news broke about the new strain of coronavirus, the media on a global level, at least global for relatively free countries, began treating this new strain as if it’s the return of the Spanish Flu. The Spanish flu lasted from 1918 – 1919 and killed somewhere between 20,000,000 to 40,000,000 people. The known deaths from coronavirus are approximately 8000 people. Coronavirus is killing mostly elderly people with weakened immune systems, which is a natural occurrence of aging. The Spanish Flu was far more of an equal opportunity killer, but people between the ages of 20 and 40 did die in greater numbers.
Coronavirus is not even close to being as deadly as the regular flu. Every year, over 10,000 Americans die as a result of complications from the flu. Compare that number to coronavirus deaths, which just surpassed 100 American lives lost due to complications from coronavirus. Going back to the global numbers we have, there are fewer people in the world who have died from corona virus than Americans killed by the flu.
In order to spin coronavirus into something far more deadly than it actually is, the media is using China’s numbers as if it were run by an honest government that is open to external verification. Rather than questioning how a city with an estimated population of 11,000,000 people, making it the 7th highest populated city in China, can have a largely unchanged total of just under 81,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus, they simply accept the numbers and ignore the truth.
The media has been more than happy to call out Israel and the United States as being the biggest villains on the world stage, but are not particularly critical of China. The Chinese suffer under one of the most brutal dictatorships in the world that has no interest in the truth coming out. If the media had any sense of integrity, they would remind people that China’s dictatorship does not allow accurate information to be released.
According to the World Health Organization, 80% of people who contract coronavirus will have mild to moderate symptoms, which means most will remain undetected. Of the 20% who develop severe symptom, 15% requires hospitalization and 5% end up in the ICU. In order to make coronavirus far more deadly than it actually is, the media ignores the fact that approximately 80% of the people who get the virus will go untested.
Despite the hand-wringing from the media, the statistics do not support the claims. American doctors do not test everyone who thinks they may have coronavirus, nor should they. They only test for those showing severe symptoms, which is a fever and shortness of breath. The first thing the doctors will do is test for influenza, which is the flu. Most people showing symptoms have the flu, not coronavirus.
The media largely ignores the fact that knowing that 80% will go undiagnosed due to a lack of symptoms. They also ignore the flu is far more deadly that coronavirus. Panicked people are better for their coverage than a calm people, which has little to do with actual news.
When the dust settles and the real numbers show just how low the death toll is compared to the regular flu, the media will move on to sensationalize something else. The panic they are causing now will have a serious impact on the global economy. Just as they moved on from SARS and never took any responsibility for their fearmongering.
The current fear being spread by a dishonest media is causing real problems. There are people that need medical assistance that aren’t going to get it in a timely manner. When there’s a healthcare scare driven by the media, the wait times at hospitals increase every time.
During SARS, cooler heads were able to prevail, and governments did not overreact. The global market took a hit worth billions in American dollars, which was without the assistance of governments shutting down businesses and having people quarantine themselves. The actions current governments are taking will cost the world trillions and there will be no quick recovery.
It is long past time for truth in news reporting laws to be written. Those who claim to report the news should be held accountable for spreading falsehoods.
