Daniel: A True Hero Who’ll Never Walk Alone

Provided by Family of Capt. Daniel Perez ZT'L

In March 2024, I wrote an article titled “Daniel: A True Hero,” honoring the life and sacrifice of Captain Daniel Perez Z”TL. Tonight, after Chag, we received the solemn news that Daniel’s body has been returned to Israel. This moment brings both profound sorrow and a measure of closure for his family and community.

Daniel was a 22-year-old IDF tank commander stationed at the Nahal Oz base on October 7, 2023. That morning, he and his crew fought with extraordinary courage for over two hours, holding off waves of Hamas terrorists. Their defense saved countless lives. Tragically, their tank was overrun, and Daniel was taken into captivity. It was later confirmed that he died that day-a hero in every sense of the word.

Just this past Sunday, Daniel’s family heard from a recently released hostage who shared firsthand accounts of Daniel’s actions in those final hours-how he fought bravely, selflessly, and with unwavering resolve. His heroism is now etched into the memories of those he protected.

Daniel was more than a soldier. He was a son, a friend, a neighbor-a young man with a vibrant personality, full of life, laughter, and dreams. A passionate Liverpool FC fan, he lived by the spirit of their anthem: “You’ll Never Walk Alone.”

I cannot speak of Daniel without acknowledging the tremendous strength and love of his remarkable family. They have borne this unimaginable burden with grace, navigating moments of deep sadness and vulnerability with deep resolve. Their tireless advocacy for the hostages has been profound, and their courage is an inspiration. May the repatriation of Daniel’s body bring them a step toward peace and closure.

This war, shaped by complex geopolitical forces, is ultimately about people-real lives, real families, and real loss. The violence unleashed on October 7th caused suffering on an immense scale, touching millions, including innocent families in Gaza mourning their own losses. It was a tragedy driven by a terror organization’s agenda, one that planned and reveled in the cruelty of that day’s atrocities.

I pray for a future of peace and healing. The wounds of soldiers, the injured, their loved ones-and indeed, all of us, will take time to mend after two years of shared trauma. May we find strength in unity, and may Daniel’s memory inspire us to live with courage, compassion, and hope.

As we reflect on this moment, we are reminded that the release of hostages remains incomplete until every individual is home. On October 14, 2025, world leaders, including former President Trump, emphasized this urgency, stating tonight:

ALL TWENTY HOSTAGES ARE BACK AND FEELING AS GOOD AS CAN BE EXPECTED. A big burden has been lifted, but the job IS NOT DONE. THE DEAD HAVE NOT BEEN RETURNED, AS PROMISED! Phase Two begins right NOW!!! President DJT

My heart remains with the families still awaiting news of their loved ones. We must must not forget them.

Daniel’s sacrifice was for the State of Israel. Let us honor him by building a future that reflects his courage and humanity.
