Despite elections, intrinsically we are one
Yes elections are coming. Yes there is in-fighting, intrigue, even anger. But the Jewish nation is one people, one united collective soul united with Above.
The American dollar says it so well: e pluribus unum — from the many is one.
And something else the American dollar says: In G-d we trust.
One nation, but even more than that, one existential united entity. Because when push comes to shove, when brothers fight among one another because each one feels that the other one has what they’re entitled to, when it seems like there’s such hate disunity and disharmony, we need to remember that each and every one of us is deeply united as one.
There are many symbols of unity in the recent month. The blast of the shofar, an existential simple cry of a people to their Father.
Yom Kippur, when our souls stand out, revealed, which reveals our essential oneness.
Sukkot, when four individual species are brought together, the lulav, etrog, hadassim and aravot. When we all sit encompassed in the sukah, symbolic of the clouds that surrounded and protected the entire nation after we left Egypt and walked through the sea.
We are one people. We come from Adam who is created a single human being. And even when the ravages of the flood destroyed much of humanity, humankind survived, multiplied, and filled the earth.
And then came Abraham, who taught the world that there is one G-d.
We are one, because we are part of the Almighty Who is one with the world. So that despite all the different opinions, despite all the arguments, despite all the debates, deep down we are one. And when we recall this, when we realize this, when we make this the central theme and the important factor of our existence, than that overrides and permeates all the differences of opinions.
“Hear O Israel, the Lord our G-d, the Lord is One.” We are one people, with one G-d, with one Torah.
We have seen many miracles over the last few years, and indeed over the last two thousand years and before. We are one miraculous nation. And we will survive forever.
