Eliminating Hamas by Genocide

Here is a thought experiment on Gaza, Hamas, and genocide.

Before I pose the question I should state my position on a few basic points.

  1. Israel is not, so far, committing genocide in Gaza, despite stupid statements by some Israeli leaders   TOI:  https://blogs.timesofisrael.com/gaza-and-genocide/
  1. I do not believe Israel can eliminate Hamas even in Gaza, let alone the West Bank and the wider Arab world.  TOI:  https://blogs.timesofisrael.com/eliminating-hamas/
  2. I support Israel’s ground invasion. However, I do not accept the black-and-white, either-or argument that Israel has to do what it is doing. There are more measured approaches. I have given some examples.  TOI:   https://blogs.timesofisrael.com/stop-killing-gazan-kids/
  1. I do believe a 90% to 95% elimination of Hamas from Gaza is possible

So, having stated a few of my beliefs, let’s go to the moral thought experiment.

I make this arbitrary definition of genocide in the context of Gaza (choose your own genocide standard, if you wish).  Genocide in Gaza is killing 100,000 or more Gazans plus the expulsion of a million or more Gazans from Gaza.  Taking that definition (or your own) the question is:

If the only way to eliminate Hamas from Gaza is by committing genocide (per my/your definition) would you do it?

I think this question poses a moral challenge because it asks everyone who takes the question seriously to weigh Jewish lives against Gazan/Palestinian lives.
