The Century of Blood – Europe’s 20th-Century Atrocities Against Jews

(As published in Part 1 of this series, Europe’s long history of negation—from papal decrees of perpetual servitude to royal expulsions and ecclesiastical cages—reveals an immutable pathology refined over two millennia. This part examines how that pathology exploded into the 20th century’s record of blood, exposing the “Civilized European” as a perpetrator of savage conduct acting rationally for societal “purification.” These atrocities were deliberate tools of a singular agenda, proving the consistency of an annihilationist intent.)

The 1915 Blueprint for Extermination

In 1915, the Russian Empire utilized Jews as a military scapegoat for its failures, deporting an estimated 600,000 Jews from frontline areas in an ethnic cleansing that served as a genocidal precursor to the Holocaust. This history is not abstract; it is a direct inheritance of trauma. My grandmother, Brocha Leya Novosedz, was sent to Kharkiv. The Gochin family, including my great-grandparents Chaie and Avrom Yisrael and all their relatives, were herded like cattle toward Melitopol. My grandfather, Sam Gochin, was conscripted into three different armies with the explicit intention that he be slaughtered in service to the regimes that hated him.

When these Jews, displaced and starving during the first Holodomor in Ukraine, attempted to return to Lithuania to save their lives, the Lithuanian government implemented measures to bar their entry. As fully documented in my book, Malice, Murder and Manipulation, these bureaucratic and physical barriers were intended as genocidal—designed to ensure the “discarded” Jewish population perished outside Lithuanian borders. This mass expulsion led to widespread death from starvation and disease, foreshadowing the systematic erasure of the coming decades—in which Lithuania would achieve the highest murder rate of Jews in all of Europe. By 1941, the environment was so lethal that it was factually safer for a Jew to be in Nazi Germany than it was to be in Lithuania.

The Record of Blood: Categorized Atrocities

Across most of these European-led genocides and pogroms, my own family members were among those slaughtered. The data preserved at Yad Vashem serves as a harrowing ledger of this personal loss, documenting the systematic hunting of the Rummels, Novosedzs, and Gochins.

State-Sanctioned Expulsions and Genocide

  • The Holocaust (1933-1945): 6 million Jews slaughtered across Nazi-occupied Europe—two-thirds of the prewar population. This industrialized slaughter was personal: the names of my murdered family members are recorded forever in the Yad Vashem Central Database of Shoah Victims’ Names. A tally of these records reveals over 150 identified relatives—including 76 from the Rummel family, 43 from the Novosedz family, and 33 from the Gochin family—who were hunted and slaughtered by their neighbors. These figures represent only the identified victims; many more names remain unknowable, erased from history by the very neighbors who seized their lives and property.
  • Herero and Namaqua Genocide (1904-1908): Namibia; 50,000-100,000 slaughtered; a German-led precursor to industrialized genocide.
  • Russian Jewish Expulsions (1914-1915): 600,000 Jews deported; thousands slaughtered from starvation and exposure.
  • Assyrian, Armenian, and Greek Genocides (1913-1923): Over 2 million slaughtered by the Ottoman Empire, highlighting the parallel targeting of ethnic minorities during wartime crises.

Civilian-Led Pogroms

  • Kishinev Pogrom (1903, 1905): Moldova; 66-68 Jews slaughtered in total.
  • Odessa Pogrom (1905): Russia; thousands slaughtered.
  • Bialystok and Siedlce Pogroms (1906): 110 slaughtered total.
  • Ukrainian Pogroms (1918-1921): 100,000-200,000 Jews slaughtered across 1,300 sites.
  • Kielce Pogrom (1946): Poland; 42 Jews slaughtered after the war, proving the Shoah did not satiate the European bloodlust.

Deliberate Starvation

  • First Holodomor (1921-1923): Ukraine; 1.5-2 million slaughtered, including Gochin family members Avram, Edel, Jacob Skala, Deborah, Gershon Ioffe, Iosef, Abram, Freyda Leya, and Tsipa starved deliberately.
  • Holodomor (1932-1933): 3-5 million Ukrainians and Jews slaughtered through state-enforced famine.

Grassroots Collaboration and Popular Participation

This savagery was not solely the work of a few leaders; it involved widespread public participation across the continent. Ordinary citizens in countries like Germany, Poland, France, Ukraine, and Lithuania actively collaborated. Neighbors denounced Jews to authorities for personal gain—seizing homes, law practices, and furniture within hours of their neighbors being herded to death. This was a popular economic strategy. Within a decade of 1933, two-thirds of Europe’s Jews were slaughtered by Europeans who perceived their actions as rational and beneficial for their own economic stability.

Individual Europeans were often guilty participants, not passive bystanders, revealing a continent where annihilationist impulses thrived under veneers of order and reason. This record of blood reveals a pattern unbroken into the present day.

Why Truth and Zionism are My Only Legacies

My profound personal loss is not a mere footnote; it is my enduring legacy and the reason I care so deeply about the truth of persecution and the bedrock of facts. When I see the names of 150 of my own relatives identified at Yad Vashem—knowing thousands more are lost to time—I realize that my voice is all that remains for them. This is why I care so much about Israel and Zionism. Israel is the only place on earth where Jewish blood is not an expendable public good. Zionism is the firm, rational, and historical necessity of a people who have learned, through the slaughter of their own families, that they can never rely on the “tolerance” of a continent that has spent 2,000 years trying to erase them. My commitment to truth is my commitment to their memory; my commitment to Israel is my commitment to the survival of the Jewish people.

In the next installment: Part 3: The Modern Masquerade – Antizionism as Recycled Hatred. We will expose the legal hypocrisy of modern European states and the “Clean Hands” doctrine.
