Forgetting instead of remembering?
I really do not know which is worse? There are no remedies! As my granddaughter Ella the paramedic who lives in England, would say “It is what it is!” The Yom Kippur War. Why is this war different from other wars”? Where were you? Where was I?
I came to Israel in 1949. I had become a rabid “Zionist” after joining the Zionist youth movement HaShomer Hatzair (Young watchman) in London, when I was 14 years old. It was during World War II which was supposedly the “War to end all Wars” but did it?
My father received the lowest grade in the army! He suffered from a mastoid in his ear which actually was operated on during the Blitz. I remember sitting in the corridor outside the ward at the so called “Jewish Hospital” in the East End of London, which was being bombed daily, and praying that we would not be killed!
Well he survived that, so did we! He was employed by the army on “essential work” which was basically erecting “lite” housing as it is known today! They were called Nissan huts.
So even if he was not “fighter” material he was very useful. Sadly he died of cancer on the last day of the WAR!
Life goes on “as it were” and now in the final phase of my life I am a widow with a metapelet (carer) and a small dog called Biggie!
I am now realizing that having a dog is, a means to making friends. I have lived in Hadar Yosef for many years and apart from my neighbours in the block of flats where my apartment is, I hardly know anyone else by name. A smile here and there and that’s it!
Now its seems that because of this adorable little dog I am at last making new friends.
The previous owners named him Biggie! I can almost hold him in my palm!
He really believes that he is BIG! Maybe this is the new “lease of life” which I need?
Now of to a festive meal with my Israeli family where we will share our recent experiences with the family and friends in England. I am indeed a lucky old lady even if in a short while I will forget that I even wrote this blog. Hag Sameach for the beautiful Succoth and Simcha Tora celebrations and I look forward to ending this HAG dancing and holding the Sifrei Tora at my synagogue Beit Daniel in Tel Aviv. Please God!
