Do you feel like you are getting enough sleep at night? If you have difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep, you are not alone. According to statistics that the Sleep Foundation has published, more than a third of all adults are not getting enough sleep at night. The average adult requires between seven and eight hours of sleep every night. If you have difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep, you are not allowing your brain to recharge. What are a few ways you can get the sleep you need? Learn more about how to improve your sleep hygiene.

Get On a Regular Sleep Schedule

Some people have a difficult time falling asleep when they get into bed. Other people fall asleep easily but cannot seem to stay asleep. One of the ways you can improve your sleep habits is to put your body on a regular sleep schedule. Many people like to sleep in on the weekends; however, you might derail your body’s sleep schedule. As a result, you might have difficulty falling asleep when the workweek comes around again. Try to go to bed at the same time every night. Then, try to get up at the same time every morning. If you train your body to go to bed and wake up on a consistent schedule, you will fall asleep more quickly when you get into bed.

Manage Your Stress Effectively

Another reason why you might have a difficult time falling asleep is that there is a lot of stress in your life. Stress can keep you awake at night, and you need to find ways to manage your stress. For example, you may want to exercise more often. Or, you may want to talk to your friends and their family members to see if they can support you. You might even want to reach out to a mental health professional. Remember that you can ask other people to help you manage your stress. You might also want to explore activities to manage your stress healthily.

Avoid Screens Before Bed

Many people like to watch TV before they go to sleep at night. You may even want to scroll through your phone and check out social media. Even though this might sound like an excellent way to decompress, it can also keep you awake at night. Screens emit blue light. This blue light can stimulate your brain, keeping you awake. Before going to bed, try to stay away from computer screens, television screens, and phone screens. You may want to read a book instead. That way, you give your brain a chance to relax.

Stay Away From Caffeine in the Afternoon

Many people cannot get up in the morning without a cup of coffee. You might even feel like you need a cup of coffee in the afternoon if you feel yourself starting to drag. However, even though this cup of coffee can help you get through the workday, it can also keep you awake at night. This is because caffeine has a half-life of five hours. Therefore, if you drink a cup of coffee in the afternoon, you will still have caffeine in your system when you try to go to bed. This could be why you are having a hard time falling asleep.

Make Sure You Get Enough Sleep

In the end, these are just a few of the many tips you should follow if you want to get more sleep at night. Even though it can be difficult for you to fall asleep or stay asleep, some professionals can help you. If you get enough sleep at night, you give your brain a chance to recharge. As a result, you might have an easier time focusing the next day, and you will have an easier time dealing with stress. If you need help managing your sleep, you should reach out to your primary care doctor. They can help you find ways to get the sleep you need.
